State police

State Police Troop M Bethlehem will be conducting its 29th Camp Cadet June 16-21 at Camp Fowler, Orefield.

This year 90 cadets will be selected to have a first hand opportunity to experience what it takes to become a law enforcement officer.

To be eligible for Camp Cadet, a boy or girl must be at least 12 years old but not older than 14 by May 1; be a resident of either Lehigh or Northampton counties; and must be in good physical condition.

The camp, which is funded solely by donations from area police, civic, private citizens and business groups, is designed to bring a better understanding to youth, about the law enforcement profession while living in an atmosphere of an actual state police training academy.

There will be blocks of instruction and demonstrations presented by Pennsylvania State Police, firearms Instructors, forensic services unit, special emergency response team, and Emmaus Police Department, K-9 units, patrol troopers and the aviation unit (helicopter).

Additional instruction and demonstrations will be conducted by University MedEvac, Tri-Clover Fire and Rescue, Bethlehem Police Department Bike Unit, Tiger Schulman MMA Karate, and Lehigh Crime Stoppers, Lehigh and Northampton County Coroners, Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Secret services, and Allentown Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT).

Cadets will also be involved in competitive sports including softball, basketball, rifle, soccer and flag football in the afternoons.

Trophies will be awarded to the champions at the graduation ceremony 6 p.m. June 22.

Counselors will be comprised of law enforcement personnel from State Police Troop M and local police departments from Tinicum and Lehigh Township, Slatington Borough and various civilian police personnel.

Deadline for applications is May 28.
