CMS students win with CLIU logo design at computer fair

Three Catasauqua Middle School students were recently recognized at the Carbon Lehigh Intermediate 21 Regional Computer Fair for putting their creativity into action.

Katie Fisher, Bradshaw Henning and a student who asked to be identified only as Nikitta B. were awarded first place for the computer fair logo they designed.

The students, under the direction of Catasauqua Area School District K-12 Gifted Support teacher Dawn Fisher, spent 20 to 25 hours in school and out of school designing the logo.

Fisher said the students quickly decided they wanted to create a logo to enter into the competition.

Katie Fisher said the students began the process by thinking about what avenues they might want to take.

"We brainstormed ideas," Katie said. "We came up with new ideas every day." Fisher said the students are taught brainstorming techniques.

Each student was assigned a particular part in the design process. Katie was responsible for the color scheme, Nikitta helped with painting and Bradshaw was responsible for curving lines and creating the text.

In the process of creating the logo, the students learned new skills. For instance, Bradshaw said he "figured out how to use the software program."

Katie said the greatest lesson she learned was developing ways of "working together" with her peers

"We learned how to compromise," added Nikitta.

Fisher indicated she was very happy with the overall performance of the students.

"The two things that impressed me most were the way the group became a team over the course of the process and the level of originality that they embraced," she said.

In addition to the poster board and the actual logo, the students placed the logo on T-shirts and a cup.
