Huff's and St. Peter's Union churches are having a walk to raise funds for the hungry and homeless May 11. The five- and 10-mile walk begins 8 a.m. at St. Peter's and a two-mile walk will start 10 a.m. at Huff's Church. The walks conclude at Huff's, where a light lunch will be served. If you are unable to walk, help out by pledging a donation to one of your friends or fellow church members who can. The series presented by the Emmaus and Upper Milford Environmental Advisory Council, "South Mountain; Our Backyard: Past, Today, and Tomorrow" continues 7 to 9 p.m. May 21 and June 18 in the Emmaus High School multimedia room (enter at flagpoles on Macungie Avenue near Pine Street, then follow signs). The program for May 21 is "Using and Protecting Our Mountain: Acting now, looking to the future." The final program June 18 in Upper Milford is "From the Mountain to our Backyards: Bringing nature to our yards and parks."
You know it is spring when plant sales appear on the calendar. The Hivel Und Dahl Preservation Society of Upper Milford Township is having a plant sale 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 18, at the Upper Milford Farmers Market, 5671 Chestnut St., Zionsville, adjacent to the township building. There will be lots of perennials to choose from at bargain prices. Call Bruce Mordaunt at 610-395-9836 for more information. The Farmers Market opens for the season this Saturday, May 4.
Learn more about Upper Milford Western District Fire Co. #1 10 a.m. till 2 p.m. May 18 at an open house at the fire company on Chestnut Street in Old Zionsville. There will be free refreshments, games for children, crafts and face painting.
A CPR class is scheduled for 10:30; upon completion, a certificate will be given. New York Life representatives will photograph and fingerprint children. Come see the fire trucks and our area's ambulances.
The Upper Milford Western District Fire Co. #1 Ladies Auxiliary meets 7 p.m. the first Tuesday of each month at the firehouse. They are always looking for new members and new ideas.
Don't forget to vote in the May 21 primary election. There is always a good turnout at presidential elections, but in primaries, not so much. Don't let 10 percent of the voters in your party decide who you can vote for in November. Make your voice heard.
Springfest at Salem United Methodist Church, 6440 Powder Valley Road, Zionsville, will be held 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 4. Activities include a bake sale, flea market, flowers for Mother's Day and planting. Lunch will be served, featuring chili made on-site in an iron kettle by Ivan and Mary Shirk. There will be an appearance by "Uncle Jeffrey" from Station WTAP, 10 a.m. to noon. The event will be held rain or shine in the enclosed pavilion. For information, call 610-965-6796.
The Lower Milford Fire Company will hold their monthly pork and sauerkraut dinner 4:30 to 7 p.m. May 9. The fire company is located at 1601 Limeport Pike.
The fire company's annual carnival will be held June 12 to 15. Watch for more details in next month's column.
Upper Milford Township supervisors meet the first and third Thursday of every month. May meetings are May 2 and 16. A representative of the Red Cross will be at the May 16 meeting for further discussion of the township's emergency response plans.
Vera Cruz senior citizens regular meetings are held 1 p.m. May 2 and 16.
The Upper Milford Recreation Commission meets 7:30 p.m. May 15.
The Emmaus-Upper Milford Joint Advisory Council meets 7:30 p.m. May 20 in Upper Milford.

Upper Milford Western District Fire Co. No. 1 holds its breakfast buffet the first Sunday of every month. The May breakfast will be May 5. The June breakfast is June 2.

The Historical Commission will meet May 14. The Planning Commission will meet May 6. Their meetings are always the first Monday of the month. The Recreation and Open Space Board meets Wednesday, May 8.
