STUDENT OF THE WEEK Ryan Jaeger
Q: What grade are you in?
A: I am a senior at Emmaus High School.
Q: What is your favorite subject? Why?
A: My favorite subject is math. I really enjoy the challenge of solving complicated math problems. There's a real sense of accomplishment when you figure out a particularly difficult question.
Q: Have you received any special awards or recognition?
A: I am a National Merit Finalist and a member of both the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society. I have been recognized for outstanding academic excellence every year since my freshman year.
Q: Are you involved in any extracurricular activities?
A: I have played varsity tennis since my freshman year. The tennis season just started and so far we are off to a great start, 9-1. I have been a member of the academic team for the last two years and have participated in the Pennsylvania Math League. In my free time, I enjoy playing basketball and soccer with my friends.
Q: What is your next goal after high school?
A: I would like to pursue a degree in actuarial science at Penn State. Up until this past year, I didn't know what I wanted to do until someone suggested I should look into becoming an actuary since it combines all the areas that I enjoy– math, economics, statistics, business and finance.
Q: What would you say your biggest challenge has been so far?
A: My biggest challenge this year has been staying focused on my studies. It is easy to get distracted in your senior year, especially the second half. I have a tendency to procrastinate and put things off, so I'm always reminding myself not to leave things for the last minute.
Q: What do you want to be remembered for?
A: My parents have always stressed the importance of doing well in school but more importantly, being a good person and respecting others. So, I hope I am remembered for not only being a scholar but also for being someone who treated others with kindness and respect.
Q: Who is in your family?
A: My mother, Christine and my father, Randy. I have two brothers, Kyle and Sean. Kyle is in 10th grade at Emmaus and Sean is in fourth grade at Lincoln Elementary School. I have a cat, Toby and a dog, Zoe.
Q: Do you have someone you look up to?
A: I look up to several people but the person I most admire and respect is my father because he works so hard to provide for our family. Even with the stress and hours he works, he is always there for us.
Q: Do you have any advice for your peers?
A: Don't procrastinate. You generally don't do your best work the night before a project or assignment is due.
