Softball must recover from two losses

For the first time this season, the Lady Green Hornet softball team has dropped two games in a row.

Losses to Liberty and Bethlehem Catholic, the two-time defending Lehigh Valley Conference champions, have dropped Emmaus to 10-5 overall and 6-4 in the LVC.

Even with the losses, Emmaus is still in good shape to win the West Division of the LVC and has already qualified for districts. With the season winding down, now isn't a good time to start to struggle.

Offensively, Emmaus had been averaging five runs per game coming into their game with Liberty. Against Liberty and Bethlehem Catholic combined, Emmaus scored just three runs in the two losses. Defensively, four errors against Bethlehem Catholic hurt Emmaus' chances and were a big part of the loss.

Despite errors behind them, junior pitchers Olivia Marcks and Rachel Brown continue to have impressive seasons.

Marcks is 6-2 and has completed all seven of the games that she's started this season, posting a 1.66 ERA, while Brown is 4-3 with a 2.23 ERA on the year.

"One constant for us is our pitching," said coach John Eyer. "No matter who is on the mound for us, we know that we have a chance to win if we swing the bats and play well defensively."

It didn't help that Emmaus ran into Beca pitcher Joelle Morey, one of the better pitchers in the LVC. Not only did Morey pitch well against the Hornets, she launched a two-run second inning home run and later drove in another run in the 7-1 game.

On the mound, Morey worked out of a bases-loaded one out jam created primarily by errors, and allowed just one run to score in the inning.

"We haven't been aggressive enough at the plate," explained Eyer. "She [Morey] is a good pitcher, but we missed some chances, especially early in the game, and that really hurt us against her."

Against Liberty, the Hurricanes scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings and held a 3-0 lead going into the sixth inning.

Morgan Patterson delivered a two-run home run to pull Emmaus within one, but Liberty was able to hold off the rally and pick up a 3-2 win over the Lady Hornets. Patterson's home run was her first of the season and she is hitting .326 this season for Emmaus.

After a showdown with Freedom (11-3, 6-3), Emmaus hosts Allen (3-12, 2-8) and defending District 11 Champion Pottsville (10-3, 7-2) before a game at Dieruff (0-14, 0-10) to wrap up its next week of games.

Pottsville defeated Bethlehem Catholic to win the District 11 Championship last season. The final game of the regular season comes on May 9 when Emmaus hosts Central Catholic (2-12, 1-9).

Emmaus needs just one more win or an Allen loss to officially capture the division title and they've already qualified for districts.
