As part of a challenge for students in a gifted support class at Salisbury Middle School, seventh graders Lany Lagunilla and Margaux Eripret organized a basketball competition, held April 19, to raise funds for the Race for Adam organization that provides support for Adam Recke and his family.
Adam, son of middle school teacher Sean Recke, suffers from Niemann-Pick disease, described as a childhood form of Alzheimer's.
A foundation set up by middle school principal Robert Cassidy, Race for Adam, has held numerous events to benefit Adam and his family.
Lagunilla and Eripret, responding to the challenge to find a project that would impact the community, set up the basketball competition.
Eight teams were organized and donation cans were set near the school office. The teams with the greatest amount of contributions were finalists and allowed to compete in the April 19 event.
Teacher Michelle DeOliveira said she expects donations to approach $600.
