The latest Salisbury Police Department enforcement wave targeted at aggressive drivers in the South Cedar Crest Boulevard corridor has netted 105 vehicle stops and 94 citations issued.
The enforcement details took place between the end of March and the end of April. They are funded by grants from PennDOT and pay for overtime for the participating officers so no patrol officers are taken away from day-to-day patrol duties.
"Nicer weather brings out more drivers," Salisbury Police Traffic Safety Officer Bryan Losagio said. "We target the South Cedar Crest Boulevard corridor because it is a notorious area for drivers who ignore the posted speed limit. Our goal is not a high number of traffic stops or citations, it is the highway safety of our township residents and those who pass through our boundaries."
Seventy-six speeding citations were issued, one red light violation, two seat belt violations and 13 other miscellaneous infractions such as no insurance, expired registration and expired inspection stickers, Losagio said.
Drivers who are stopped for speeding violations and are not driving with their seat belts buckled receive two citations.
Losagio said the enforcement details will continue, and he cautions drivers to observe the posted speed limits. Signs warning drivers are entering a speed enforcement zone are clearly posted about 100 yards before the electronic speed sensors, and again a few yards before driver speed is measured.
"There is really no excuse for this kind of aggressive driving behavior, and we have a zero police tolerance toward those who drive unsafely in our township," Losagio warned.
