Four Falcons medal at ASD Invitational

With league and district track meets coming up over the next two weeks, top teams from around the area met last Friday in one of the area's top invitational meets.

Salisbury had several league and district contenders at 11th Annual Allentown School District Invitational at J. Birney Crum Stadium.

Two Falcon athletes took home gold medals, two more earned slver or bronze medals and several others posted top-10 finishes.

Kaitlyn Toman (pole vault) and Dan Reichenbach (triple jump) grabbed the gold, while Kyle Gonoude took second in the 1600-meter run and Kennedy Freed finished in third place in girls javelin.

Toman entered the meet seeking to clear 11 feet in the pole vault for the third time in her career. She topped out at 10 feet, 6 inches at Friday's meet, which was good enough for first place.

"I was hoping to get 11," she said. "But I plan on getting that later in the year."

After clearing nine feet just once last season, Toman trained at Vertical Assault in the offseason. It produced steady progress.

Toman, a sophomore, cleared 11 feet for the first time in a recent practice then did it again in a meet against Wilson.

She hopes to reach this year's state championship meet and will use the ASD Meet as a confidence builder toward that goal.

"It definitely helped with the stress level of leagues and districts," she said. "You get to see the Mountain Valley Conference and the Lehigh Valley Conference. It just gets you ready for the postseason."

Reichenbach is a postseason veteran, having earned a state medal last season.

His goal is to stay healthy for his final high school postseason. He triple jumped 45-5 last Friday, just an inch under his career best.

"I took a week off and let my back heal," he said. "I've been heating it and icing it. I only started practicing [Thursday] from a whole week off. I just focused on some little things."

Reichenbach enjoys the atmosphere and the competition provided by the ASD Meet.

"It's exactly like a league or district meet," he said. "The competition is better than I'll see until states. The track, the surface and the pit are more like what I'm going to see at leagues and districts."

While the throwing area at JBC might not be as new and up to date as the track and jumping areas, it didn't stop Freed from throwing 108-8 for third place in the javelin.

"I feel really good," said Freed, a senior. "I actually beat my personal record so I'm pretty happy about that."

Freed's previous best was 105, which she threw at a recent league meet.

She said focusing on form with Salisbury's new throwing coach helped her improvement. She plans to continue to throw further and peak in the postseason.

"My goal is to hit 110 and place (at leagues and districts)," Freed said.

Sophomore runner Kyle Gonoude took second place in the 1600 meters and seventh in the 800.

A state qualifier in cross country, Gonoude will challenge for league and district titles in distance races. The Colonial League Championships will be held next Tuesday and Wednesday (May 7-8) at Whitehall. Districts are one week later.

Gonoude also placed seventh in the 800 meter run.

A few other Salitop 10 athletes to earned top 10 finishes at the ASD Meet.

Sophomore Holly Szita placed fifth in high jump at 4-10.

Freshman Lindsay Bauer took fifth in long jump at 16-10 1/2.

Dylan Bonge earned sixth place in pole vault.

Austin Bartholomew finished eighth in javelin with a throw of 151-0.
