LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Baseball team takes one game at a time

A lot of high school baseball fans, and probably even some players, are excited to see what Salisbury's baseball team can do in the postseason.

But the Falcon players and coaches are doing their best to keep that out of their minds.

"We've stressed all year that the only thing that matters is the very next game," said Salisbury head coach Mike Pochron. "There have been lots of teams that have had successful years and then end up not winning anything. We're not taking anything for granted."

Salisbury, which had Monday's game with Saucon Valley postponed due to weather, heads into Wednesday's game against Notre Dame (Green Pond) with a 15-0 overall record and a 12-0 Colonial League mark.

The Falcons have been solid in all three phases of the game this year. They have a talented team, but also have intangibles that winning teams need.

"They seem to like each other," said Pochron. "They continue to work hard and they do everything we ask. They really love the game of baseball."

A few of this year's players were part of the team's 2011 run to the state title game. The Falcons earned the state silver medal that year. Along with it they picked up the confidence of knowing what it takes to get deep into the state playoffs.

Salisbury has three quality pitchers in Nic Ampierto, Justin Aungst and Tyler Cooperman. The team gets it offense from all part of the line up.

"We have a power-packed line up one through nine," said Pochron. "Sometimes we use a DH. Then it's one through 10."

Mason Kresley leads the team with two home runs.

Salisbury can clinch a league playoff berth with one more win or a Notre Dame (GP) loss.

The Falcons hold a two-game lead over Southern Lehigh in the Colonial Legaue South Division. They can clinch the top seed for the playoff with three wins or three Southern Lehigh losses.

The Spartans have won seven in a row since losing to Salisbury, 11-0 on April 10.

The Falcons finish out their schedule with Notre Dame, Saucon Valley, Wilson and Southern Lehigh, which is the season finale and will be played under the lights at Limeport Stadium May 8.
