Palko homer beats SL

Call it revenge or just call it getting the job done, but the Lady Hornets picked up a 4-2 win over Easton Monday that helped to avenge one of their three losses on the season, which came to the Red Rovers back on April 13.

The win puts Emmaus at 10-3 on the season, with a 6-2 mark in the Lehigh Valley Conference. With six LVC games remaining, the Lady Hornets hold a 3 1/2-game lead over Allen, a five-game lead over Central Catholic and a 5 1/2-game lead over Dieruff as Emmaus hunts for yet another West Division title.

Emmaus is in a stretch of games that has it facing some of the toughest teams in the LVC, including remaining games against Liberty, Bethlehem Catholic and Freedom, which come on the heels of their win over Easton and a tough 2-0 loss to Parkland last Friday. Also squeezed in there was a non-conference game against Southern Lehigh that saw junior pitcher Rachel Brown allow just two hits as she threw her first shutout of the season in 5-0 win.

One of the big names lately for Emmaus has been shortstop Miryah Palko, who delivered her first home run of the season against the Spartans. On the day, Palko drove in two runs and scored two others for Emmaus. Senior Cassidy Sullivan also continues to hit, driving in two runs on two hits against Southern Lehigh.

Coach John Eyer has been proud of how his team has responded this season and he's enjoying the fact that there are no one or two players who are the ones that the team needs to rely on for wins.

"It's kind of nice when you never know who is going to be the one coming through for you day-to-day," said Eyer after a recent win. "We have our players who always get the job done, but anyone in our lineup is capable of contributing either at the plate or with a big defensive play."

Junior Kristi Morello scored the tying run in a win over Whitehall last week, but fell as she stepped on home plate and suffered a neck injury. Eyer challenged his players to get the win for their injured teammate and they went on to a 3-2 win over the Zephyrs. Brown picked up eight strikeouts in the win and made her presence known at the plate, going 3-for-3 on the day with a run scored and an RBI, which turned out to be the game-winning hit.

The Lady Hornets have also been without senior right fielder Kayla Higley, who is battling a bad back. Higley is hitting .348 on the season and has played well defensively for Emmaus in right field.
