Injuries can't keep Reichenbach down

Injuries are a part of sports. Nearly every athlete at some point in his career has to deal with a nagging pain. The great athletes are the ones who can cope with them and still perform at a high level.

That is just how senior Dan Reichenbach's track and field career at Salisbury has been highlighted. The long jump and triple jump athlete has dealt with injuries, and is seemingly never 100 percent healthy, which also may be due to the fact that the track season usually begins just as basketball season ends.

But that hasn't stopped him from competing at the highest of levels and accomplishing many accolades along the way. And according to head coach Doug Hensinger, it has shaped who he is.

"Dan has been a great athlete to coach," Hensinger said. "I hope there are many more like him. You enjoy what you have while you have it. He's been a top performer in the league for all four years, so we're going to miss him."

Reichenbach won the triple jump event at districts last year with a mark of 45 feet, six inches, and placed third in the long jump.

At leagues, Reichenbach finished second in both the triple and long jumps. He also medaled at states in the triple jump event, finishing sixth.

"He's a very hard worker," noted Hensinger. "He applies himself and doesn't just go through the motions. He practices with a purpose. He wants to prove himself."

All of his hard work comes while facing pain. Last year he dealt with a knee injury, and this year there are some back issues, but Reichenbach still pushes forward stronger than ever.

"You just have to deal with it," added Hensinger. "Sometimes you face injuries, but that's what makes him so special. Sometimes you expect injuries and you deal with them and move on.

"When you're involved in sports, injuries are a part of it, and Dan is good at just moving on through them."

Reichenbach has jumping in his genes. Having a father who was also a district champ, helps with his success.

With the postseason vastly approaching once again, Hensinger is looking for Reichenbach to lead the way for the boys team.

"Record-wise we're not where we wanted to be, but when you move on to leagues and districts and states, we look for our individuals to do well," stated Hensinger.

Reichenbach will look to win an event at states this year, finishing just two positions short a year ago.
