Falcons remain undefeated

If there is a formula to beat the Salisbury baseball team, no one has figured it out yet. Quite frankly, no one has come close.

In what has been the team's staple all season long, the Falcon pitching staff once again proved its superiority amongst the rest of the league during Wednesday's 8-0 victory over Northwestern Lehigh.

Tyler Cooperman, who improved to 4-0 on the season, pitched a complete game, one-hit shutout for the Falcons (12-0 overall; 9-0 in Colonial League). Last Wednesday's win over the Tigers (7-4 overall; 4-4 in Colonial League) marked the fourth time this season that opponents have been held scoreless against the Falcons.

"It feels good being undefeated," said Cooperman. "We're doing well so far and just got to keep it going."

Cooperman was spotted a five-run lead before throwing a pitch. In the top of the first, the Falcons tallied five runs to make a statement early.

After Brad Vangeli and Evan Kulig led off with back-to-back singles, Nic Ampietro recorded his first hit with a single to center field that scored Vangeli after a Tiger error in the outfield.

Two batters later, Mason Kresley then added a two-RBI double that brought home Kulig and Ampietro. Ryan Utsch kept the inning alive after being hit by a pitch, and Antony Dee continued the barrage with another two-RBI hit, a two-out bloop single to right field that made it 5-0.

"It's nice having it behind you," said Cooperman of the early lead. "Then you just go attack at the mound and keep putting up runs on offense."

"I think that gives him all the confidence in the world," said Pochron. "We knew he was going to pitch a good game. But I'm sure going out there with five runs, now he can relax, he can make his pitches, and have no worries."

The Falcons were held scoreless for the next three innings, but the Tigers never took advantage. And Cooperman continued to carry the load with four consecutive hitless innings until the Falcons' bats came back to life in the fifth inning.

Kulig notched a one-out double in the fifth that started a string of three consecutive hits. Ampietro added his third single, which scored Kulig after another Tiger error in the outfield. Justin Aungst added a double to left field that brought home Ampietro, and Aungst scored during the next at bat after another Tiger error that made it 8-0.

"I think all the pitchers are doing real well and that's real good motivation," said Ampietro. "And we're hitting the ball right away, so that gives the pitchers a little bit of room."

Cooperman added four strikeouts and one walk in the win.

Three different Falcons had two or more hits. Vangeli went 3-for-4 with a run scored, Kulig scored two runs and went 2-for-4, and Ampietro added two runs while going 3-for-3 with a walk.

"I'm feeling really comfortable at the plate right now," said Ampietro. "I'm seeing the ball pretty well. I'm just trying to jump on every pitch I see."

The Falcons defeated Catasauqua on Friday to continue their torrid start. Aungst picked up his fourth win of the season. All three starters, Ampietro, Cooperman, and Aungst were 4-0 heading into Monday's game against Palmerton.
