As part of National Preservation Month, the Emmaus Heritage Alliance is hosting history and architectural activities 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 18 at various locations throughout the borough. The committee suggests starting with a tour of God's Acre Cemetery 11 a.m. and then visiting Emmaus' historic properties which will be open noon to 4 p.m. The library is presenting an architectural slide show 2 p.m. All the events are free and open to the public. The Emmaus Farmers Market opens its 11th season 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 5 at the National Penn Bank parking lot, 235 Main St. For information, visit www.emmausmarket.com.
The Emmaus Garden Club will meet 12:30 p.m. May 7 at Faith Presbyterian Church, Second and Cherokee streets. The program, "Uncommon Fruit Trees and Their Care," will be presented by Bassem Samaan, owner of Trees of Joy Nursery in Bethlehem. For information, call 610-967-5058.
Look for runners throughout town between 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. May 11. The Emmaus Main Street Partners is coordinating the Emmaus Survivors Benefit Run with proceeds to benefit the survivors of the South Fifth Street fire. There will be a 3K and 5K course with both runs starting at the Emmaus Run Inn, 320 Main St., and finishing on Fifth Street. Organizers stressed this is a fun race not a competitive one. Funds will be raised through donations.
There will be a Yard Sale for Cancer Support sponsored by the Cancer Support Community on the Triangle, South Fourth & Chestnut streets, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. May 11. The Emmaus Main Street Partners will sponsor a sidewalk sale at various shops throughout Emmaus, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 22. The sidewalk sales continue on the second Saturday of every month.
All senior citizens over the age of 55 are invited to the Emmaus Senior Citizens meetings at St. Matthew's E.C. Church, Ridge and Fifth streets. The group meets 1 p.m. Fridays. The May programs are May 3: "Song Style" by Cindy; May 10: Lehigh Valley Baptist Church Singers; May 17: Bob Kahle, pianist; May 24: a film; and May 31 is game day. Emmaus Borough Council will meet 7 p.m. May 6 and 20 in council chambers, 28 S. Fourth St. The offices will be closed May 27 for the Memorial Day holiday. The compost center's hours beginning May 6 to Sept. 23 are 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Mondays; 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. or dusk Wednesdays; 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. The Emmaus Historical Society museum, 563 Chestnut St., is open noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays. The museum will also be open 4 to 9 p.m. May 8 and 22. The society's May meeting program is "Native Americans of Eastern Pennsylvania and the Jasper Quarries of Vera Cruz" 7 p.m. May 15 at St. John's Lutheran Church parish hall, 5th and Chestnut streets. The program by Bob Benner will include a display of genuine artifacts. The society will be holding a yard sale 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 1 (the same day as the borough's community-wide yard sale) at the museum, 563 Chestnut St. If you have items to donate, the group will be accepting deliveries noon to 7 p.m., May 29 and 30 and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 31. Please do not donate upholstered furniture, clothing or shoes.
Area Memorial Day services include: May 26: The Emmaus Veterans Committee will honor departed comrades buried in each of the six Emmaus cemeteries with ceremonies. The first program is 8 a.m. at Calvary Cemetery, followed by visits to Old Moravian, Moravian at Ridge Street, Lutheran Reformed, Northwood and the last program is at Evangelical, Second and Ridge streets.
May 26: Remembrance bricks will be installed 1 p.m. at Emmaus' Commemorative Gardens, which is located near the Knauss Homestead off Emmaus Avenue. The ceremony will include 16 bricks to honor those who have served in the military, past and/or present. For information on the gardens, visit www.emmausremembers.org.
May 27: The annual Memorial Day Parade will begin promptly 9 a.m. from the Emmaus High School parking lot. The route follows Chestnut Street and ends at the Memorial Triangle on Fourth Street for the memorial service. In the event of inclement weather, the service will be held in the Emmaus High School auditorium at 9:30 a.m. The parade committee urges all veterans to participate with their Posts.
The Emmaus Special Entertainment Commission has lots of fun activities in store for Emmaus families during the spring and summer months. Starting May 4, Zumba classes are offered free in the Community Arts Pavilion at 9:45 a.m. There will be a Memorial Day Dash & Splash 5k and Emmaus Gets Fit Health Fair with activities beginning 9 a.m. at the Community Park. For information, visit wwwemaus5k. com. The Summer Concert Series begins at the park noon to 3 p.m. May 25 with performances by School's Out and 6 to 7:30 p.m. May 26 with The Band of Make Believe.
The Emmaus Public Library, 11 E. Main St., will be closed May 25 and 27 for the Memorial Day holiday. May 12 to 18 is Police Week and May 19 to 25 is Emergency Services Week. This is a great time to thank these dedicated men and women who work to keep our community safe.
April 27 is a busy day in the borough: The Friends of the Emmaus Public Library's annual book sale will be held 7 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. at Lower Macungie Middle School. The Nutrition Group, the foodservice provider for the East Penn School District, is holding a Nutrition Health and Safety Fair 9 to 1:30 p.m. during the book sale. The fair offers food samples and health screening.
Also, the Emmaus Police Department is participating in the National Prescription Drug Take Back 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 27 at the Emmaus Police Department, 500 Jubilee St. This event provides an opportunity to safely dispose of unwanted prescription drugs by the Drug Enforcement Administration. At 9 a.m. the Emmaus Fire Department is holding a home safety seminar at 100 Klines Lane. And, the pick up for the Lions Club's Clam Chowder sale is 7 a.m. to noon at the Moser Pavilion in Emmaus Community Park. Deadline for ordering is April 26. For information, call 610-965-7355.
Don't miss the Zumbathon 2 to 4 p.m. April 28 in the Emmaus Community Park Arts Pavilion. This event benefits the Lehigh Valley No Kill Shelter.
