WCSD to fund camp

The Whitehall-Coplay School Board approved funding for the LCTI Summer Fun Camp at its April 8 meeting by a vote of 8-0. School board President Eileen Abruzzi was not present.

The LCTI funding allows the district to fund 50 percent or $55 per student per week of the middle school students' tuition rate for attending summer fun camp.

In other business, the board approved the Camp Whitehall bus request from Whitehall Deputy Mayor Jack D. Meyers for the use of three school buses for the Camp Whitehall program. The buses are going to be used from June 19 through Aug. 16. Ridership is limited to residents of the district.

All members also voted in favor of approving an agreement with TriBoro Fencing to furnish and install a mesh chain link fence around the girls softball field.The cost is $11,967.

Shari Noctor also presented the board with a packet detailing the Relay for Life program.

"This will be our 10th year at Whitehall High School and 100 years of the American Cancer Society," Noctor said. "This year's theme is Dancing Through the Decades."

This year's event, scheduled for June 22 and 23, will include 10 bands, the attendance of local mayors and the fire department smoke house, among other things.

"Thank you again for letting us use your school," she said.

Board member Joyce Wheeler asked Dr. Barbara Chomik to announce the Whitehall Zephyrs Graduates of Distinction. The graduates are John Sedovy from the Class of 1957, Dr. John W. Miller from Class of 1967 and Erik M. Strohl from Class of 1990.

"The alumni selected are being honored for their personal and professional achievements as well as their contributions to the community," said Chomik.

The induction ceremony will take place April 25 at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium.
