Boston Furjanic and Richard Perry each knocked in four runs for Northwestern. Taylor Breidinger went 4-for-4 and drove in two runs for the Tigers (3-1 overall, 1-1 Colonial League).

Monday, April 1

Tamaqua-Northwestern

Nick Rodriguez drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift Northwestern to a 6-5 non-league victory over Tamaqua.

Rodriguez had two singles, a double, a stolen base and an RBI. Richard Perry (single, double, two runs scored) and Collin Breidinger (single, double, run scored, RBI) contributed to the Northwestern win.

Blue Mtn.-Northwestern

Northwestern beat Blue Mountain, 14-4 in six innings of a nonleague match up.

The Tigers' Nick Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with a double, triple, two RBIs and two runs scored. Josh Williamson also went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.

Pen Argyl-Northwestern

Pen Argyl grabbed an early lead then held on for a 3-2 win in the Tigers first league game of 2013.

The Knights scored a run in the first and two in the second. The Tigers scored a pair of runs in the third and threatened in three of the last four innings but couldn't get the break or key hit they needed.

"We came out and got those three runs and it happened to be enough," said Pen Argyl head coach Jake DeBoer. "There are usually a lot of runs crossing the plate up here. Coming away with a 3-2 victory feels good."

Down one run, the Tigers had a runner on base with just one out in the fourth, fifth and seventh, but couldn't score the run.

Northwestern's Brandon Eden reached base with a one-out single in the fifth, but Knights' first basemen Tanner Geake snagged Austin Yanek's line drive and tagged Eden to complete an inning-ending double play.

In the seventh, Knights relief pitcher Josh Persson, who gave up a one-out walk to Rich Perry, scooped two hard-hit ground balls to prevent a Tigers rally.

Perry, who got the start, gave up three early runs but settled then allowed just two hits over the last five innings.

The Tigers scored both their runs in the third inning. Nick Rodriguez led off the inning with an infield single and Collin Breidinger doubled. Two runs scored on Alex Smith's one-out single.

After that outburst, the Tiger offense seemed ready to break out. But the Knights, which used three pitchers in the game, didn't let it happen.

"I felt confident that we were going to have a shot," said Len Smith. "They made some plays in the field. We hit two up the middle and the pitcher made two great plays on hard-hit balls in that last inning."

Geake went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored for the Knights. Starting pitcher Phil Ruggiero allowed five hits and a pair of runs over four innings to earn the win.

at Pen Argyl

The Northwestern boys and girls swept Salisbury and Pen Argyl in their season opening track meet.

In the boys meet, Austin Weiss took both hurdling events and tied for first in the high jump to help the Tigers reach 100 points against both opponents. Cam Richardson added wins in the 100 and 200 while Northwestern also captured all three relay races.

In the girls meet, Lauren Anderson (100M/200M) won the 100 and 200, while Haley Yost (800M/1600M) and Katie Cappuccino (100H/300H) each won a pair of events as well.

Northwestern rode a strong performance from starting pitcher Lydia Danner to edge Tamaqua 2-0 in non-league action.

Danner tossed a complete game shutout, allowing only two hits and striking out 13. Lyndsay Papp had an RBI single for the Tigers.

Taylor Fritz and Alexis Boyer had the two hits for the Blue Raiders.
