JV's Hinkle tosses first perfect game

If you're a young pitcher from Emmaus High School, it's not easy to get recognized.

The varsity team has a strong bunch of pitchers and doesn't really need much help right now. But JV pitcher Trey Hinkle might have come up with one way to put himself in the back of varsity coach John Schreiner's mind though - a perfect game.

"Hopefully [the varsity coaches] notice, but they've got good pitching there, so I don't know if they really need any help," said Hinkle after his perfect game.

Hinkle threw the gem Thursday in a 10-0 win over Allen, with the game being limited to five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule. Even though the game was shortened, a perfect game is an accomplishment worth noting. From how Hinkle was dominating hitters, the odds that he could have given two more perfect innings are pretty good.

When Hinkle took to the mound, he felt good about his chances.

"I felt really good warming up and I thought I would have a good day," he said.

The Emmaus sophomore knows that there's a lot that goes into pitching a perfect game. After all, you can't give up any hits or walks and you need some help from your teammates and Hinkle was quick to acknowledge the help he received.

"The fielding was tremendous. You can't throw a perfect game without strong fielding behind you and our fielders made all the plays," said Hinkle.

After the first couple innings, Hinkle said he just felt comfortable, but as the game went on, he started to think about what he might be able to do. While he could hear whispers from his teammates as they talked about his outing, nobody was saying anything to Hinkle, just allowing him to stay focused on what he was doing.

One of the keys for Hinkle was having good command of all four of his pitches, which helped him to strike out 10 hitters in the game.

"I usually have good control and that definitely helped," said Hinkle of his perfect outing.

While the varsity team may not need much pitching help after getting three straight shutouts, it's safe to say that Hinkle's outing will put him in the conversation if the varsity team needs an arm down the road.
