Spring has sprung at Emmaus High School, which means a lighter wardrobe, the start of the spring season, the spring musical, proms and the annual Shave for the Brave event.

Shave for the Brave will be held 5 p.m. March 22 in the EHS gymnasium, and is a fundraiser through the St. Baldrick's Foundation to benefit pediatric cancer research. Volunteers, including students and staff alike, get their heads shaved by designated "shavees" and also collect monetary donations.

Since 2010, the track team and Coach Shannon Petrunak have been surpassing their goals and raising thousands of dollars for research. In 2010, the goal was $5,000 and a total of $24,566.99 was raised. In 2011, $39,920 was raised. The goal this year is to match the same amount.

Sophomore Alana Margolis will be shaving her head. Inspired by her father's struggle with two types of cancer simultaneously and emerging victorious, Margolis wanted to pay tribute to all of the men, women and especially children fighting cancer.

"I'm doing Shave for the Brave to show all the little girls and even teenagers out there that feel like they aren't pretty anymore since they don't have hair, that you don't need hair," Margolis said. "It's just there…I want to show them that they can feel beautiful and are beautiful."

So far, Margolis has gained support from her friends and family and started a team called "RIP Alana's Bun," because she is known for her trademark high bun. Also, Margolis plans to donate her hair before the shave to be made into a wig through the Locks of Love foundation.

The Senior Ball will be held Friday, May 10 at the Palace Center. That night, doors will open 5 p.m. and dinner will be served 6 p.m. The senior picnic date has been changed to Friday, May 24, at the Emmaus Community Park. Students should stay tuned for information about ticket sales for both events.

The junior prom will be held Saturday, May 4 at the Rodeway Inn and Conference Center. Tickets will be sold April 2 through 9.

EHS Student Government Association will be hosting a spirit night 4 to 8 p.m. April 3 at the Trexlertown Chick-fil-A. Fifteen percent of all sales from drive-thru and walk-ins will be donated back to SGA and seniors have the opportunity to win a free catered graduation party with a value of $1,000.

Tickets for the spring musical "Legally Blonde: The Musical" are being sold in the main office as well as online. Seniors with a Gold card receive a complimentary ticket. The show will run 7 p.m. April 10 to 13 with a matinee April 13.
