Macungie residents arrested in connection with police pursuit
A Macungie couple allegedly injured two officers and caused significant property damage while on a drug-fueled chase spanning multiple days and two states.
Shayna Sykes, 23, and Blake Bills, 24, face a litany of charges in both Pennsylvania and New Jersey resulting from a series of incidents which culminated with multiple stolen police cruisers careening through the streets of Camden, N.J., and Philadelphia March 5.
Sykes and Bills allegedly fled from a Camden officer after being observed attempting to purchase drugs approximately 1:20 p.m. March 3. According to a Camden County news release, the officer in pursuit was injured when his vehicle rolled over while attempting to make a sharp turn during the chase.
Sykes and Bills were reportedly in a Mazda at the time of the March 3 incident. This vehicle matches the description of a vehicle owned by Sykes' grandmother.
According to Macungie Police Chief Ed Harry, the couple was allowed to borrow the vehicle March 1 and never returned. Harry said his department received a missing persons report on Sykes and Bills March 4.
A Camden police officer allegedly observed Sykes and Bills in a disabled vehicle 2 a.m. March 5 in northern Camden, just north of the Ben Franklin Bridge. The officer asked the couple if they needed help but was called to another location before conducting a more detailed investigation. Upon the officer's return, he found the vehicle had been abandoned and discovered it was stolen from Philadelphia when he ran the plates.
Around 9:30 a.m., also March 5, Bills and Sykes allegedly attempted to steal a woman's vehicle in Camden, just south of the Ben Franklin Bridge. After failing to steal the vehicle, Bills allegedly stole a Camden officer's cruiser while he was conducting an unrelated traffic stop around 9:50 a.m.
Camden Police Officer Sekou Reid-Bey was conducting the motor vehicle stop at the intersection of Federal Street and Haddon Avenue, Camden, near the entrance to Interstate 676 leading over the Ben Franklin Bridge.
Bills, who was not the subject of the Reid-Bey's investigation, jumped in the cruiser while the officer was in contact with the driver of the stopped vehicle. He proceeded to flee the scene, allegedly striking the officer with the vehicle. He then drove around the block to pick up Sykes.
Reid-Bey, a 16-year veteran with the Camden Police Department, suffered a fractured leg and was taken to the hospital in what was initially classified as serious condition. The officer was able to radio for assistance prompting the ensuing police chase.
The pair fled over the Ben Franklin Bridge into Pennsylvania in the stolen police vehicle, Camden Police Cruiser 301.
Camden police radioed Philadelphia police about the stolen vehicle and the chase was picked up by officers in Pennsylvania.
Police were able to stop the Camden cruiser at the corner of North 7th and West Norris streets in Northeast Philadelphia, just blocks from Temple University's Main Campus.
Bills was apprehended when the Camden vehicle was stopped but Sykes allegedly managed to steal Philadelphia Police Car 2625 and continue to lead police on a chase through the narrow streets of Northeast Philadelphia.
Philadelphia police said a 55-year-old female pedestrian was injured jumping out of the way of the recklessly driven cruiser. She was treated for a bump on her head and released.
Sykes also allegedly struck one moving vehicle, three unattended parked cars and a parked box truck before police were able to end the pursuit which swerved and turned through the heavily populated area.
"A lot of people could have gotten hurt in this. It speaks to just how reckless these two individuals were," Deputy Police Commissioner of the Philadelphia Police Department Richard Ross said. "Their disregard for human life, not only police, but civilians as well, could have caused much more damage and we are just thankful no one was seriously injured or killed."
