UPPER AND LOWER MILFORD COLUMN

Upper Milford Township supervisors are looking for input into updating the township's emergency management plan, especially in the wake of the extended power outage after Hurricane Sandy. Do you want more information? Would you like to help out? Then come to a meeting 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 12 at the township building to discuss emergency management plans. The public is invited.

Spring sports registrations are now open on the Upper Milford Youth Association website. UMYA is offering: baseball (7 years and older); softball (7 years and older); T-Ball (5 and 6-year-olds); soccer (U7, U8, U10, U12, U14 and U16). UMYA soccer also announced the addition of a U7 Division for spring soccer.

The registration section on the umya.org website reflects this change and 6-year-olds can now register for spring soccer. U7 games will be played at Farmington Hills off Sauerkraut Road near Macungie. Practices will be held at Lenape Park. The U7 teams will be coed.

UMYA is also looking for a coach for this age group; if interested, contact mskekel@tmbsystems.com.

One sure sign of spring is an Easter egg hunt. The Vera Cruz Community Association will sponsor a hunt Saturday, March 30, beginning promptly at 1 p.m. at Mystic Chain Park, Main Road East in Vera Cruz. All children up to age 12 are invited to participate. Prizes will be awarded. For more information, call 610 967-5432.

Old Zionsville United Church of Christ will host an all you can eat breakfast buffet and bake sale 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday, March 16. The church is located at 5981 Fountain Road, Old Zionsville. There will be a cost for guests 6 and over for breakfast.

A spring craft and vendor bazaar will be held 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 23 at Macungie Memorial Park. Several local crafters and vendors will be selling under one roof, as well as a Chinese auction and bake sale. All proceeds benefit March of Dimes-Gavin's Team.

St. Peter's Union Church will hold its annual spring bazaar 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 23. There will be lots of good food to eat in or take out, including homemade chicken pot pie, homemade soup and baked beans, turkey barbecue and delicious baked goods. Come early for your best selection.

There will also be gifts, craft tables, a used book sale and raffles. To rent a table, call Janet at 610-845-8070 or the church office at 610-966-3030.

The church is located at 7863 St. Peters Road, between Seisholtzville and Shimerville.

Take a break from cooking at the Lower Milford Township Fire Company. They will have a pork and sauerkraut dinner Thursday, March 14, and a spaghetti dinner Thursday, March 28. Both dinners run 4:30 to 7 p.m. or until sold out. You can eat there or take it out. The fire company is located at 1601 Limeport Pike.

At the Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit, weekly Lenten worship services continue 7 p.m. every Wednesday through March 20.

Community Lenten services are ongoing at participating area churches on Thursday evenings, with a soup dinner 6:30 p.m. and service 7:30 p.m. Upper Milford Mennonite will host the service March 7, Zion's Lutheran March 14 and Hosensack ECC March 21.

Good Friday services will be held 1 p.m. March 29 at Old Zionsville UCC and 7 p.m. at Upper Milford Mennonite.

St. Peter's Union Church is participating with Huff's Church in Lenten services. Services begin 7 p.m. Wednesday evenings, preceded by a light supper at 6 p.m. Tonight, March 6, the service is at St. Peter's. The March 13 service will be at Huff's and the March 20 service at St. Peter's.

At noon Good Friday, March 29, St. Peter's will observe the Stations of the Cross at noon, and hold another service 7 p.m.

The first worship of the day Easter Sunday at St. Peter's will be 7 a.m., followed by a continental breakfast till 8:30 a.m. and a second service 9 a.m.

The Upper Milford Township Zoning Hearing Board will hear two appeals March 11, beginning 7:30 p.m. Seedway LLC of 5901 Vera Cruz Road is seeking variances to construct a building addition and the Lehigh County Authority is requesting a special exception to install a standby generator at 4475 Far View Court.

Upper Milford Township supervisors meet March 7 and 21.

The Upper Milford Western District Fire Co. #1 Ladies Auxiliary meets 7 p.m. April 2 at the firehouse. They are always looking for new members and new ideas.

Vera Cruz senior citizens' regular meetings are held 1 p.m. March 7 and 21.

The Upper Milford Recreation Commission meets 7:30 p.m. March 20.

The Emmaus-Upper Milford Joint Advisory Council will meet in Upper Milford March 25.

The Upper Milford Historical Society meets 7 p.m. March 28 in the Upper Milford municipal building. For information, call vice president Neil Moser at 610-966-4376.

Upper Milford Western District Fire Co. #1 holds its breakfast buffet April 7.

Following is the March meeting schedule for Lower Milford Township. All meetings begin 7:30 p.m. unless otherwise noted:

The board of supervisors workshop will be March 7 and their regular meeting March 21.

The Historical Commission will meet Tuesday, March 12. The Planning Commission met Monday, March 4. Their meetings are always the first Monday of the month. The Recreation and Open Space Board will meet March 13.

The quarterly meeting of the Hivel Und Dahl Preservation Society of Upper Milford Township will be held 7 p.m. March 26 in the Upper Milford Township building, 5671 Chestnut St., Zionsville. After a short business meeting, Zionsville resident James Baker will give a talk on Ernst Hartenfeld, who was an itinerant painter of the area in the early 1900s. He painted landscapes of local farms in exchange for room and board, as well as murals in area taverns. Several of his paintings will be on view. Refreshments will be served. Guests are welcome. Don't forget to 'spring forward' this weekend! Daylight Saving Time starts Sunday, March 10.
