Legislation sponsored by State Rep. Justin Simmons, R-131st, to help inform parents about registered sex offenders in communities was unanimously approved by the House Education Committee.

"My bill would provide parents with more information in the fight against child predators," Simmons said. "That information will help them determine the safest walking route for their children to school or to the school bus stop."

House Bill 555 would require each Pennsylvania school district to provide a link to the state's Megan's Law website in any transportation-related communication distributed to students, parents and the public. School entities, including charter and cyber-charter school, would also be required to prominently display the Megan's Law website link on its homepage, regardless of whether the entity transports students.

"The intent of this bill is to make parents aware of the registered sex offenders who live in their neighborhoods," Simmons said. "It's a simple, commonsense idea that will help to protect our kids by educating their parents about the Megan's Law website without burdening the school district with a severe financial impact. Even if we can save one child from the horrors of sexual abuse, we have done a service for the children of the Commonwealth."

House Bill 555 now heads to the full House for consideration.
