Hornets advance four to regionals
It's the game of numbers that every wrestling coach plays in their head before they enter the individual postseason.
Qualifying a certain number of wrestlers through each round of the postseason is always an ambitious foray, and for Emmaus head coach Jeff Arbushites, last weekend's results from the District 11 3A wrestling tournament weren't as bountiful as he thought, but were far from bare.
The Green Hornets advanced four wrestlers to this weekend's Northeast Regional 3A tournament at Liberty to leave the program with a sense of validation based off its successful dual meet season.
Jacob Younger (132), Jansen Grabowski (145) and Gordon Daichendt (152) each took fourth place, while Cole Franklin (138) took home a fifth-place medal, as Emmaus finished ninth in the team standings with 76 points.
"I'm the fulcrum of the sea-saw right now," Arbushites said. "I would have liked to see more, but I think the way our guys stepped up and wrestled showed that they at least performed according to their seeds or exceeded those expectations."
The four Emmaus wrestlers moving on will also have their first regional experiences. Cole Franklin is the lone sophomore in the group, along with three seniors that move on hoping to survive the gauntlet of regional wrestling.
This year's regional tournament features a change in the alignment with District 4 being replaced by District 12. District 2 remains a constant, but the influx of the Philadelphia Catholic schools, could provide a different type of tournament heading into this weekend.
Younger will take on David White of Father Judge, a District 12 runner-up, in his preliminary bout. Franklin gets a tougher draw as the fifth seed, squaring off against District 2 champion Frank Carrozza of Delaware Valley.
Grabowski meets Berwick's Kevin Laubach in his opener and Daichendt faces Derrick Simms of Wyoming Valley West.
The crap shoot of the tournament is always in play, but Arbushites knows that this year's bracket can even bring more wild cards into the equation.
"All of our guys are going to be fresh into regionals, but regionals is fresh in itself," he said. "With the new district alignment, I think it's wide open. They just have to see where they're at and take on the first wrestler and take it from there."
