Football scholar athletes are named

The Lehigh Valley Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame is having the Football Scholar Athlete Banquet on Sunday, March 3, at 4:30 p.m. at the Northampton Community Center.

The speaker this year is Penn State coach Bill O'Brien. Tickets are $30. Contact Herb Barrall at 484-515-6530.

HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLAR-

ATHLETES OF LEHIGH VALLEY

Allen - Zakary Joseph Dakes

A 6-0, 185-pound safety and wide receiver, he ranks 18th out of 691 students. He is an honor roll student, a member of the National Honor Society, a member of student government and is a staff member of both the yearbook and school newspaper. He is involved in community service at the Allentown Jewish Community Center and was selected to play in the Blue-Grey National All-Star Game in Tampa, Fla., as a defensive back.

Central Catholic -

Kevin Michael Kern

A 6-0, 180-pound running back and linebacker, he ranks 56th out of 197 students. He is an honor roll student and member of the National Honor Society. He participates in basketball, class plays, the Pennsylvania Math league and the PA Junior Academy of Science. He volunteers with the Catholic Heart Work Camp, the Parish Youth Group, the Souper Bowl of Caring and as a youth basketball coach.

Bangor - Brett Joseph Albinson

A 6-1, 205-pound quarterback and defensive end, he ranks 39th out of 274 students. He is an honor roll student and member of the National Honor Society. He participates in baseball and basketball, is a staff member of both the yearbook and school newspaper, and serves as a peer tutor. His community activities include serving for the Knights of Columbus Squires, coaching a youth baseball clinic and serving as a lifeguard.

Bethlehem Catholic -

Joseph Anthony Ruggiero

A 5-11, 205-pound fullback and linebacker, he ranks 69th out of 190 students. He is an honor roll student, class officer and member of student government. He is a member of the Becahi THON Committee and the LVC Student Athlete Character Council. He is an altar server, active in Dream Come True, Angel 34 and his church's food and clothing drives.

Catasauqua -

Zachary Barry Stopay

A 5-11, 180-pound tight end and linebacker, he ranks 14th out of 114 students. He earned all-conference honors, is an honor roll student and member of the National Honor Society. He participates in baseball, the Varsity C Club, SADD and is a student council officer. He is active in his church, a youth sports volunteer and a Special Olympics volunteer.

Dieruff - Steven H. Hunt

A 5-9, 260-pound offensive lineman, he ranks 37th out of 395 students. He is an honor roll student, editor and staff member of the yearbook and has been involved in the Latino Leadership Academy for two years. He volunteers at Book Night at a local elementary school and is active in helping with numerous events at his church.

East Stroudsburg North -

Judson Onkware Kibagendi

A 5-11, 186-pound guard, he ranks 24th out of 286 students. He is an honor roll student and participates in varsity track and the math club. His community activities include volunteering with the Salvation Army, working with students at an elementary school field day and he works as a server at Dairy Queen.

East Stroudsburg South -

Tyler Steven McLaughlin

A 6-0, 175-pound quarterback, he ranks 76th out of 396 students. He is an honor roll student, National Honor Society member, student government member and participates in baseball. His community activities include serving as a soup kitchen volunteer and delivering meals during the Christmas season.

Easton - Kristopher Alan Horton

A 6-1, 190-pound placekicker and punter, he ranks 108th out of 641 students. He is an honor roll student, National Honor Society member and participates in track. He is a member of the SAVE Environmental Club, the Easton Angels, the Technology Student Association and twice earned first place in the PA Junior Academy of Science. He volunteers with Little League Baseball, the American Cancer Society, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and is an altar server in his church.

Emmaus - Robert Dalton Landis

A 6-2, 217-pound placekicker and punter, he ranks 201st out of 634 students. He is an honor roll student and earned all-conference honors. He plays Scrub League Basketball and participates in lacrosse and soccer. He volunteers at various youth soccer tournaments, participated in renovating a shrine at a local cemetery and in converting a convent to a maternity shelter, as well as sending supplies to troops overseas.

Freedom -

Sean Christopher Wrobel

A 6-1, 175-pound placekicker and punter, he ranks 37th out of 440 students. He is an honor roll student, a member of the National Honor Society, earned all-conference honors and participates in baseball. His community activities include Read Across America, park and recreation clean up and volunteering as a youth football and baseball coach.

Jim Thorpe - Daniel Hartung

A 5-11, 165-pound wide receiver and defensive back, he ranks 9th out of 120 students. He is an honor roll student, a member of the Olympian Learn and Serve, the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and is a peer mentoring leader. His community activities include volunteering for the Split Rock Community Organization and as a lifeguard.

Lehighton -

Jacen Michael Nalesnik

A 6-2, 215-pound quarterback, running back, receiver, tight end, defensive end, and kicker, he ranks 1st out of 145 students. He is a member of the National Honor Society, earned all-conference honors and participates in baseball, basketball and wrestling. He is a member of the Red Cross Club, FBLA, the Carbon County Citizen's Bee and is a peer tutor. He volunteers with his church youth group, youth sports and a food pantry.

Liberty - Sean A. Frankenfield

A 5-9, 155-pound wide receiver and defensive back, he ranks 25th out of 613 students. He is an honor roll student, member of the National Honor Society, participates in track and is a student government class officer. He is a member of the Debate, SADD, and weightlifting club, serves on the spirit week committee and is an elementary mentor. He volunteers with his church youth group, youth sports and Habitat for Humanity.

Nazareth - Tyler Jeffrey Bray

A 6-0, 175-pound outside linebacker, he ranks 18th out of 355 students. He is an honor roll student, member of the National Honor Society, a class officer and a basketball team captain. He is a member of the French Club and the Early Risers. He volunteers with the Interact Club, field weeks at the elementary, and middle schools and youth sports.

Northampton -

Imad Mathew Azar

A 5-11, 220-pound center and defensive end, he ranks 30th out of 444 students. He is an honor roll student, member of the National Honor Society, participates in wrestling, DECA and the math club. He serves as a mentor at both the Children's Home of Easton and Wall 2 Wall Urban Youth and coaches various youth sports.

Northern Lehigh -

Caleb Edward Johnson

A 6-4, 215-pound running back and linebacker, he ranks 9th out of 151 students. He is an honor roll student, member of the National Honor Society, earned all-state and all-conference honors and participates in basketball and track. He is a member of the Interact, SADD, Spanish and Chess clubs, as well as the student council. He volunteers at various events at his church and is a nine-year altar server.

Northwestern -

John Steven Dolinich

A 6-0, 185-pound placekicker and punter, he ranks 44th out of 170 students. He is a member of the National Honor Society and participates in track and soccer. He is a member of the science, foreign culture and ski clubs and the Emerging Health Professionals.

Notre Dame Green Pond -

Kyle L. Steinmetz

A 5-10, 180-pound offensive guard and defensive end, he ranks 8th out of 123 students. He is an honor roll student and participates in varsity lacrosse. He is a member of the Notre Dame Mini Dance Marathon to benefit pediatric cancer. He is active as a volunteer at the Safe Harbour Homeless Shelter.

Palisades -

Michael J. Roszkowski

A 5-10, 210-pound offensive guard and defensive tackle, he ranks 26th out of 171 students. He is an honor roll student, National Honor Society member and participates in wrestling, track and band. He is the Ecology Club President, member of the German Club, the German American Partnership Program and attained the rank of Eagle Scout. He is an altar server in his church and is active in community days.

Palmerton - Alex Vignone

A 5-10, 175-pound tailback and free safety, he ranks 13th out of 121 students. He achieved high honors all four years of high school and participates in track. He is a member of the Environmental Club, student council, the gifted program and he is a 2012 Mini Maxwell Award winner. His community service activities include Special Olympics, a youth sports coach, the SOAR behavior program and Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.

Parkland - Paul C. Tajiri

A 5-7, 195-pound defensive and offensive lineman, he ranks 27th out of 745 students. He an honor roll student, member of the National Honor Society and he is a class officer. He is a member of the Math, English, Science and Spanish Honor Societies as well as FBLA and the Key Club. He is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, volunteers at a hospital and a blood drive and is an Olympic lifting instructor.

Pen Argyl - Scott Carl Beltz

A 6-3, 210-pound tight end and linebacker, he ranks 36th out of 141 students. He is an honor roll student, earned all-state and all-conference honors and participates in wrestling. He is a member of the gifted program and the life skills program. His community activities include volunteering as an instructor at a youth football camp.

Phillipsburg -

Michael Letrel Fitz

A 6-1, 200-pound tight end and defensive end, he ranks 90th out of 331 students. He has a 4.216 grade point average and is a member of the National Society of High School Scholars. He participates in varsity track.

Pius X - Stephen J. Juarbe

A 6-2, 293-pound offensive lineman, he ranks 23rd out of 47 students. He is an honor roll student and earned all-state and all-conference honors. He is Vice President of the Future Business Leaders of America organization and a member of the Friends of Rachel Club. He is a first-degree member of the Knights of Columbus.

Pleasant Valley -

Jordan Marcus Caffrey

A 6-0 150-pound placekicker and punter, he ranks 23rd out of 508 students. He is an honor roll student, National Honor Society member and participates in baseball. He is a math tutor, a participant in TDs for Cystic Fibrosis, and event organizer for Bear Shooting Camp. He volunteers for Angel 34, Special Olympics, Relay for Life, the Salvation Army, the Lucy Fund and is a community disaster volunteer.

Pocono Mountain East -

Evan Fardella

A quarterback, he ranks 148th out of 414 students. He is an honor roll student, earned all-conference honors and named to the PA Football News All-Academic Team. He is a class officer, student government member, participates in baseball and received a baseball scholarship to Wagner University. He is active as a youth sports volunteer.

Pocono Mountain West -

Jeffrey John Krisiak

A 5-10, 170-pound quarterback, he ranks 46th out of 476 students. He earned all-conference honors and participates in the weightlifting club. He volunteers with the Salvation Army, youth sports and is active in his church youth group and is an altar server.

Salisbury -

Logan Paul Renninger

A 5-11, 180-pound tight end and linebacker, he ranks 8th out of 155 students. He is an honor roll student, National Honor Society member and participates in track. He is a member of the Debate and Key clubs, the Student Advisory Council and is a peer tutor. He volunteers with the Salvation Army Soup Kitchens and Special Olympics.

Saucon Valley -

Christopher Mamay

A 5-10, 182-pound fullback and linebacker, he ranks 43rd out of 166 students. He is an honor roll student, member of the school newspaper staff and participates in varsity track and the school food drive. He volunteers in the Cops for Kids program, Special Olympics, the Community Relay for Life, and youth sports.

Southern Lehigh -

Kyle Steven Durics

A 5-11, 185-pound offensive guard and defensive end, he ranks 31st out of 254 students. He is an honor roll student, National Honor Society member and plays varsity basketball. He is class treasurer, President of the Key Club, a member of Spanish, Interact and varsity clubs, and participates in student council, student forum and the principal advisory council. He is active in his church, an altar server and community service.

Stroudsburg -

Philip Benjamin Stokes

A 6-1, 210-pound middle linebacker, he ranks in the top 25-percent of his class. He is an honor roll student, earned all-conference honors and participates in varsity baseball and the sports club. He is active in his church and a member of the church youth group.

Whitehall - Jacob Scott Rex

A 5-10, 185-pound fullback and linebacker, he ranks 2nd out of 369 students. He is an honor roll student, National Honor Society member and a National Merit Scholar, where he was honored as a commended student. He is a class officer in student government and a member of the weightlifting and ski clubs. He is a Dwight D. Eisenhower Leadership Award winner and was honored as a chapter representative at West Point. His community activities include involvement in the Big Brother/Big Sister program.

Wilson -

Gregory Kenneth Cahill

A 6-3, 235-pound offensive tackle and defensive tackle, he ranks 8th out of 156 students. He is an honor roll student, National Honor Society member and participates in varsity track. He is a member of the history and international clubs and serves on the technical crew for drama productions. He is active in his community and serves as a youth sports coach.

COLLEGE SCHOLAR-ATHLETES OF LEHIGH VALLEY

East Stroudsburg University -

Jordan Hallman

A 6-0, 190-pound wide receiver, he has a 3.28 GPA majoring in sociology. He is a dean's list student and has foreign language proficiency. He is a three-year starter, a four-year letter winner and for his career he had 105 receptions for 1,986 yards with 19 touchdowns. He is active with Breakfast with the Warriors, as a Salvation Army bell ringer, the Best Buddies program, as a youth sports coach and volunteers with the Boys Club and a local library at home in Elizabethtown.

Kutztown University -

Zach Snyder

A 5-9, 185-pound wide receiver, he has a 3.56 GPA majoring in sports management with a concentration in coaching. He earned dean's list honors in six semesters, is a five-time PSAC Scholar Athlete selection, a 1st Team All-District Academic All-Star and a Division II Athletic Director's Academic Award winner. He has volunteered with the Kutztown Special Olympics and the Women in Sports Day programs for three years. He coaches youth sports and enjoys spending time with his family.

Lafayette College -

Ethan Swerdlow

A 5-11, 195-pound punter, he has a 3.34 GPA majoring in mechanical engineering. He is a three-time Patriot League Academic honor roll selection and has been the team's punter for the last two seasons during which he did not have a punt blocked. He averaged over 39 yards per punt both seasons, and combined he pinned opponents inside their 20-yard line 30 times. For the 2011 season he was named to the All-Patriot League First Team and was selected Special Teams MVP.

Lehigh University - Zach Barket

A 5-9, 195-pound running back, he has a 3.46 GPA majoring in accounting. He is a dean's list student, a two-time All-Patriot League Academic Team selection, an FCS ADA Academic All-Star, a 2011 CoSIDA Academic All-District selection, a 2012 Capital One Academic All-American second team selection and has received the Lehigh Faculty Athletics Council Academic Award. He participates in the C.O.A.C.H. and Reading Rocks programs, enjoys hunting and fishing and has accepted a full-time position with KPMG in Philadelphia beginning in the fall of 2013.

Moravian College - Luke Trexler

A 6-0, 215-pound linebacker and defensive end, he has a 3.57 GPA majoring in business management. He was named to the Centennial Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll in 2012, a season in which he had 52 tackles, 6 for a loss, 3 sacks and 3 passes defended. For the 2011 season he recorded 35 tackles, with 4 tackles for a loss. His hobbies include outdoor sports, fitness and rafting.

Muhlenberg College -

John Gruver

A 5-10, 180-pound wide receiver and kick returner, he has a 3.164 GPA with a double major in economics and finance. He is a three-year varsity letter winner, who had 43 punt returns for 349 yards and 15 kickoff returns for 318 yards in his career. He was selected as the Palisades High School Scholar Athlete for the 2009 Lehigh Valley Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame banquet.
