State police cruiser hit; trooper stopped at previous accident

An 88-year-old Kempton woman was cited for driving too fast for conditions at 4:27 p.m. Feb. 9 when her vehicle struck a state police cruiser on Route 143, Lynn Township.

State Police Troop M Fogelsville say Catherine L. Kistler was driving a 2007 Chrysler 300 when it struck a 2013 Ford Interceptor driven by Trooper Christian E. Bleiler, 28, of Breinigsville.

According to police, Bleiler was parked in the lane of travel facing west on Route 143, due to a previous accident at 4:04 p.m. involving a 1997 Ford Excursion driven by Elmer S. Lapp, 20, of Strasburg.

Police say the emergency lights on the cruiser were operating when the Chrysler crested a hill on Route 143 and Kistler failed to react in time before the car struck the cruiser's rear driver's side tire area.

The Chrysler then tilted and drove on two wheels, before coming back down on four wheels, driving up an embankment along the north side of the roadway and coming to a rest in a cornfield.

Bleiler sustained a minor injury, police say.

Kistler, who was not wearing a seat belt, sustained a minor injury and was transported by Northwestern Ambulance Corps to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township.

Police say in the earlier accident, the SUV driven by Lapp, was eastbound, just after Quarry Road when it partially went off the right side of the road.

Lapp then over-adjusted to get back on the road and crossed over the west lane and went up the embankment on the north side.

After going up the embankment, the SUV rolled over once and landed on its tires, partially up the enbankment and in the west lane.

Lapp, who was wearing his seat belt, sustained minor injury.

None of Lapp's passengers Isaac H. Esh of Lititz, Jacob E. Blank of Strasburg or John A. Stoltzfus of Manheim, all 19, and David K. Esh of Gordonville and Leon F. King of Elizabeth, both 18, who police say were wearing seatbelts, were injured.

Lapp was charged with driving too fast for conditions, say police.
