Hornets drop close game
The Emmaus hockey team has been playing great hockey at the right time of the season. The Hornets were riding a six-game unbeaten streak, and haven't lost since a 5-2 decision on December 10 against Phillipsburg.
But Daniel Farkas broke free from the pack and scored what proved to be the game winner in a hard fought, penalty-laden 3-2 Northampton win last Monday night at Lehigh Valley Ice Arena.
Emmaus (10-3-2) had tied the game at 2-2, but before it had time to celebrate, Farkas used his speed to skate down ice onto a pass from Gunnar Mishko and slipped a shot past the glove of Michael Smoker for the lead.
Smoker had another great night in goal, recording 31 saves. This game also saw $1 go to benefit pediatric cancer for each save made by Smoker.
Drew Phillipes continued his tear on the league's points lead with a goal coming just over six minutes in on a pass that was flicked over the defender's stick by Nicholas Capizzi. David Bailey had just missed the net a few minutes prior because of a diving save from Adam Orsulak.
Derrick Wruble tied it at one with a power play goal three minutes into the second half.
The game had a playoff feel to it with players checking, and some chippiness ensuing.
There were a total of 14 penalties, seven for each team, and two of the three Konkrete Kids goals were scored on the power play.
Northampton had more of the looks on net. The Konkrete Kids outshot Emmaus 34-19, with 18 coming in the second period. Smoker held firm and kept his team in the game until the very end, when a goal may have been allowed that confused the team, coaches and fans.
Farkas's goal with under eight minutes left hit the post and jumped back out. The referees felt that the puck crossed the goal line, so they counted the goal, which stood as the game winner.
Just 33 seconds before, Capizzi hit a slap shot from the blue line to tie the game at 2. The pass came from Kevin Foster and Phillipes.
Mishko untied the game with a power play goal.
The Green Hornets, having played 15 games, will now sit back and wait two weeks for the playoffs to begin. They are slated to take on Parkland, who has played 12 games, in the Pure Division championship.
