STUDENT OF THE WEEK Alethea Khoo
Q: What grade are you in?
A: I am a senior at Emmaus High School.
Q: What is your favorite subject? Why?
A: My favorite subjects are my music courses, which include Symphonic Band, Esquire Jazz Band, Chorale, Women's Choir and AP Music Theory. In these classes, I can express myself through music while improving my technique. I especially enjoy the performance aspect of music.
Q: Have you received any special awards or recognition?
A: I am a member of National Honor Society, have been on Principal's honor roll, girl of the month for Emmaus Women's Club, treasurer for the Tri-M music honor society and Student of the Month in my junior and senior years. I have also placed in the District Band, District Chorus, and Regional Chorus. I was chosen to play the flute in the Susquehanna University Honors Band, Allentown Band Side-by-Side and the County Honors Band.
Q: Are you involved in any extracurricular activities?
A: I am the president of Women's Choir and a member of Kid-to-Kid, which is a drug and alcohol free outreach club. I am part of the Community Music School Silver Winds flute choir and am involved in my church's music ministry as well as in the teen worship team. I also perform in various piano recitals and music festivals organized by Pennsylvania Music Teachers Association and Pennsylvania Federation of Music Clubs. I enjoy accompanying on the piano for a private voice studio, school choirs, chamber groups, church children's groups and school musicals. In my spare moments, I enjoy reading a good book, crocheting and composing music.
Q: What is your next goal after high school?
A: I plan to go to college for music performance in piano and I hope to go on to graduate school to get my master's in music.
Q: What would you say your biggest challenge has been so far?
A: My biggest challenge would have to be time management with my school work, music activities and church responsibilities. Due to a busy schedule, I find it difficult to develop closer friendships.
Q: What do you want to be remembered for?
A: I want people to remember me as a loving person with integrity who works hard to do her best.
Q: Who is in your family?
A: I live with my mother, Mary, and my father, Sam. I always wanted a pet, maybe sometime in the future.
Q: Do you have someone you look up to?
A: God is my inspiration, always. After Him, I look up to my dad who possesses wisdom, courage and love. He is always there for me and a great role model to me.
Q: Do you have any advice for your peers?
A: First, I would say consider the consequences before you take action. Second, be patient and persevere through all circumstances, for you will become a stronger and better person.
