Daichendt methodical on mats for Hornets
Gordon Daichendt is known for keeping himself busy.
In addition to getting grades good enough to be accepted at Penn State Berks, Daichendt wrestles and plays soccer. He's also a member of the Emmaus fitness team that has won four straight national championships, a far cry from what his senior class has endured in wrestling.
Daichendt's class has never been to districts for wrestling, but it's looking very much like they'll get that opportunity this year. The Hornets currently stand sixth out of 10 teams that make the district meet. After a convincing win over Dieruff and two more wins over the weekend against Norristown and Father Judge in Northampton's Konkrete Duals, the Hornets are in good shape for a district bid, which is music to Daichendt's ears.
"We want to go to districts very badly. I can't even express it in words. Since my freshman year, we've never been there," said Daichendt.
Much of the team's success has fallen to Daichendt, who now has 20 wins on the season, going 2-1 over the past week. Against Norristown, Daichendt's win over Rashon Lusane in a 5-4 bout proved to be huge when the final score had the Hornets on top by just one at 37-36. The match was typical of the way Daichendt wrestles, according to his coach.
"He's just very methodical. He knows what to do and he's not very flashy or anything, but he wins," said coach Jeff Arbushites.
Daichendt believes methodical is a good word to describe his style.
"I don't go out there trying to impress anybody," he said. "I just look for ways to win and do the best that I can."
While Daichendt loves playing soccer and has had a lot of success as a member of the fitness team he finished seventh in the country last year his first love has always been wrestling.
"I'm more of a wrestler who plays soccer," Daichendt said. "I feel my commitment has been to wrestling more throughout my whole life and I think I'm better at wrestling."
Participating in three sports doesn't give Daichendt much time for other things, but he has been juggling a lot of activities for years now. He's found that he just gets himself into a routine so he has enough time to study and do well academically. Since Daichendt doesn't plan on playing any sports in college, he figures he may join a club sport to help keep himself busy.
"I've been doing it all my life," Daichendt said. "I've been doing fitness since seventh or eighth grade and I've been playing soccer and wrestling since kindergarten, so it's just become normal for me."
Daichendt believes that his jump to fitness was made easier by the fact that he was already wrestling for years and had always been doing push-ups and pull-ups along with running and jumping as part of his workouts for wrestling.
Emmaus' weekend sweep at the Konkrete Duals puts the team in good position. The regular season wraps up Wednesday night as the Hornets travel to Parkland against the rival Trojans, who at 10-2 are enjoying a strong season and are one of the higher seeds in 3A wrestling.
"It's a going to be a good match," Arbushites said. "They're a good team, we're a good team and you have the rivalry aspect, so it should be a lot of fun."
