Wrestlers eye postseason
As the wrestling season winds down, Emmaus is in a pretty good spot for a berth in the District 11 Team Tournament, which is scheduled for February 1-2 at Freedom High School.
All that remains on the regular season schedule is a home meet tonight with Dieruff, the Konkrete Duals at Northampton High School on Saturday and the final meet of the season at Parkland on January 30th.
This past week was a light one for Emmaus wrestling, with just one match on the schedule. That match went well, with Emmaus taking a 60-16 win over Allen. The Canaries are now 0-6 in the Lehigh Valley Conference and just 2-12 overall, while the Hornets upped their LVC record to 5-1 and are at 10-6 overall.
Emmaus won 11 of the 14 matches against Allen, with the Canaries taking the 285-pound match by forfeit. The Hornets collected six wins by fall, one by a technical fall and another on a major decision.
The young guns continued to impress for Emmaus, with freshman Lucas Schaf continuing his strong first season with a fall over Allen's Jaysten Merced at 106 pounds. Sophomore Cole Franklin (138 pounds) and Austin Flaugh (126 pounds), also won by a fall, with Franklin's match lasting just 37 seconds.
"I'm very happy with how our young guys have wrestled. That has really been a boost for us this season and of course, it gives us something to build on down the road," said coach Jeff Arbushites.
Unless there's a change in the District 11 rankings, Emmaus would go into the tournament as the ninth seed and would wrestle Nazareth (11-5 overall, 4-2 LVC), who it hasn't gone up against this season. The winner of that match would then have to face top-seeded Easton, which downed the Hornets 53-12 earlier in the season. If Emmaus can move up in the rankings, they would be able to at least postpone a meeting with Easton until later in the tournament, but Arbushites isn't worrying about that right now.
"When you make it through the regular season, you know you're going to be wrestling a tough team, whether it's Nazareth or Liberty or Easton, or whoever, you know they're going to be tough," said Arbushites. "You just want to be as strong going in as you can be and as prepared as you can be and then see what happens."
