Phillipes leads way to Senior Night win over Rovers
Senior forward Drew Phillipes had three of his four goals take a lead for Emmaus, which held on for a 4-3 win over Easton on Senior Night Monday at Lehigh Valley Ice Arena.
"It means a lot," Phillipes said about winning on his Senior Night. "We need every win we can get from here on out. We really want to win out the rest of the season. Winning on senior night just means so much to our team."
The win kept the Green Hornets (9-2-1) in second place out of both the Pure and Non-Pure divisions. Emmaus trails Parkland (11-0-1) by two games for the league's best record.
Emmaus came out firing on all cylinders. They held a 15-5 shot advantage and much of the possession time in the first period. Phillipes found the net just 1:14 into the game off of a pass from Nicholas Capizzi.
The Green Hornets seemed like they would cruise to a win when Phillipes added his second goal off a rebound from a Nate Kraemer shot less than two minutes into the second period. But a little over a minute later, a Red Rovers clearance in their zone took a funny deflection off the boards that skipped past two Emmaus defenders, and into the path of Tim Drevitch.
Drevitch raced to the puck and had a clear shot on net. His effort was blocked by Michael Smoker, but the puck fell right to Dylan Deleon who finished it off.
Easton (4-6) began showing some life, and began to put more pressure on net.
Tom Brady cashed in on the Red Rovers power play to tie the game at two with 9:14 left in the second.
Phillipes and Brady traded goals within the first three minutes of the third period to bring the score to 3-3 with a tense final 10 minutes to go.
With Easton avoiding two sure penalties, Jeremy Hoffer slipped a pass into the path of Phillipes, who used his speed to breakaway and have a one-on-one opportunity with Zachary Saylor.
Phillipes beat Saylor glove side, and Smoker (20 saves) prevented any further damage, coming up with some key saves to preserve the win.
"We found ways to move the puck and get by their defense," said Phillipes. "My teammates found me and I was able to put some away. I felt confident that we could get the next goal. Mike always plays a great game in net, and we held on there the last couple minutes."
Emmaus is now off until Friday, January 25 when they it hosts Pleasant Valley/Quakertown at the Lehigh Valley Ice Arena at 6 p.m.
