Northwestern gift card project collects $9,000

Northwestern Lehigh High School Counselors Carissa Snyder, Erica Gross, and Angela Traub are overjoyed that 77 families in need were given a holiday surprise this year, as a result of the communities absolute kindness and generosity.

In the spirit of Christmas, selfless residents of the community, various clubs from the high school, district employees, parents, and students dropped off gift cards to the high school counseling office in the last two weeks, totaling an amazing dollar value of $9,000.

Gift cards for stores like Walmart, Target, Weis, Giant, Kohl's, restaurants and bank cards, etc., were donated with love, hope and peace.

The high school counselors were often left speechless and emotional because of the compassion expressed by those who came bearing gifts, Traub said.

Traub said one resident of the community commented, "The student who is struggling could be my son's teammate or lab partner. We've gotta help one another out."

Another parent donor remarked, "This community helped my family during a difficult time. I want to show my gratitude and give back," Traub said.

During a time of economic despair and national tragedy, it's important to remember our neighbors, friends and family.

This project proved residents in the community can work together and refresh their strength during trying times.

Twenty-eight years ago, the food and clothing drive project started with the Student Council and nurses Elaine Hausman and Susan Christ.

Approximately 10 years ago, the Gift of Giving project at Weisenberg Elementary started with Lisa McGrath and a group of PTA parents.

"It is an honor to continue the project at the high school and serve the students and their families," Traub stated.
