Hockey team nearly upsets Parkland

Six goals and 48 minutes wasn't enough.

The Emmaus hockey team jetted out to a three-goal first period lead, and also held a three-goal third period lead, but Parkland erased each deficit, and the teams settled for a 6-6 draw last Monday night at Lehigh Valley Ice Arena in Whitehall.

Emmaus (6-2-1) was playing like a team that wanted to avenge an earlier 5-1 defeat at the hands of the Trojans (9-0-1) in early November.

After Drew Phillipes five-holed both the defender and the goalie to give the Green Hornets the early lead, it looked liked they'd get that revenge.

Phillipes later assisted in a goal, setting up Nate Kramer for a one-time blast past Robert Stock. Logan McHale then found Jeremy Hoffer down ice who finished for a commanding three-goal lead.

"After last week we had something to prove," said head coach Brian Braun about a loss to Phillipsburg the week before. "The kids proved something tonight. I'm proud of them. If that game was 45 seconds shorter, we would've won. We'll shake it off and be back in action Friday."

Parkland netted three second period goals to bring the game to 4-3 after two periods, and seemingly had all of the momentum. The Trojans outshot Emmaus 40-15 over the course of the game, but when the Green Hornets had their chances on goal, they more than likely capitalized.

Phillipes had his hands in the first two goals scored in the third period. He skated down ice, made a quick move by Stock and slotted home the opening goal of the period to give Emmaus a 5-3 lead. Then, he skated in a circle around the Trojans defense, and found an unmarked Ben Farabaugh for another three-goal lead, at 6-3 with 9:36 remaining.

But once again Parkland fought back, netting three goals over the next nine minutes, one coming with 40 seconds to go.

Green Hornets goalie Michael Smoker was big again. Smoker made critical saves at opportune times. His 31 saves kept Emmaus in it, and if it wasn't for a last-second, extra-man advantage assault on net, Smoker would have won this game for the Green Hornets.

The game had a playoff atmosphere to it, with the student sections and parents heard after each big play.

"There was a lot of energy," said Braun. "Parkland was undefeated, and although they still haven't lost, we've tarnished their record a little by throwing in that third digit. Every goal brought excitement to our bench. It was a game of a lot of emotions."

The rivalry was as fierce as ever. Referees blew for 14 total penalties.

Phillipes and Hoffer tallied two goals for Emmaus, with David Bailey, Nicholas Capizzi, and David Lawrence contributing assists to those goals for the Green Hornets.

Emmaus is back in action before the holiday, on Friday at the Steel Ice Center in Bethlehem against Freedom at 6 p.m.
