The Emmaus wrestling team competed in the Saucon Valley Invitational this past Saturday and came away with a fourth place finish with two of their wrestlers taking first place in their weight classes. Senior Jansen Grabowski (145 pounds) and freshman Lucas Schaf (106 pounds) won their weight classes.
Schaf, competing in his first high school event, was especially impressive, taking a major decision over Stefhan Capie of West Scranton in the finals. At 145, Grabowski beat Joel Toledo of Pleasant Valley 9-5.
Of the other Emmaus wrestlers competing, seniors Jacob Younger (132 pounds) and Gordon Daichendt (152 pounds) and sophomore Thomas Alcaro (195 pounds) all took second place finishes at the tournament.
The tournament matched eight teams in the competition. Host school Saucon Valley came out on top with 229.5 points, with Pennsbury placing second with 163 points. Pennsbury forfeited two matches where they didn't have wrestlers to compete at those weight classes and also had another wrestler forfeit due to injury. Pleasant Valley finished third at 147 points, followed by Emmaus at 141 points.
Emmaus has its first match of the season against Freedom Wednesday night in the auxiliary gym before heading into another tournament this weekend. The Hornet wrestlers will compete in the Battle at the Beach Tournament this weekend in Dagboro, Delaware. Last season, Emmaus competed in the tournament and finished fourth as a team.
When it returns from Delaware, Emmaus will have three matches before the Christmas break, facing Easton next Wednesday prior to hosting both Pocono Mountain West and Central Catholic on December 22.
