LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Four-goal second ignites Hornets

Drew Phillipes scored two goals with less than 21 seconds left in the second period, and Emmaus broke through with four second period goals to defeat Whitehall/Salisbury 5-2 last Monday night at the Lehigh Valley Ice Arena in Whitehall.

Whitehall/Salisbury took the lead with 2:33 remaining in the first when Gavin Carey slapped in a shot off a centering pass from his brother Ian.

But there was no time spent sulking. Whatever head coach Brian Braun said to his team at the intermission worked. The Green Hornets (6-1) were fired up and created plenty of scoring chances.

David Bailey scored the first goal of the game for Emmaus. Bailey took the puck at the center line and used some shifty moves to maneuver around the Zephyrs defense, and finished with a shot into the upper right netting past goalie Tristen Collins.

Matt Heffelfinger took advantage of a Whitehall/Salisbury penalty to put the Green Hornets up for good at 2-1 with 10:17 to go in the second.

"We were coming down the ice with the puck, and we got a nice low shot off," said Heffelfinger on the buildup of the goal. "I just turned to the right and was there for the rebound. Props to Nate [Kraemer] for getting a nice low shot off on time."

To add insult to injury, Phillipes netted two goals late in the period. The first came with 21 seconds on the clock, and the second snuck in just as the buzzer sounded.

"We just wanted to keep the momentum up," said Heffelfinger. "We wanted to control the puck, and keep hitting hard shots. We were short on players tonight, so a lot of players stepped up. We just really worked hard tonight."

Lost behind all of the scoring, was the Green Hornets defense. Goalkeeper Michael Smoker stopped 28 of 30 shots on his net.

Whitehall/Salisbury got one by Smoker early in the third period, to bring the game to 4-2.

Jeremy Hoffer added an empty netter with 0:34 left, as the Zephyrs were putting pressure on the Green Hornets goal.

The win gives Emmaus the momentum back after losing their first game of the season to Parkland two weeks ago.

"It's nice to bounce back after a tough loss," said Heffelfinger. "It gives us confidence again to keep playing strong."

Jackson Goodman (two assists) and David Andrews also contributed in the win. Kraemer finished with two assists.
