Steckel Elementary School student Kendra Hard meets Mikayla as students exit an antibullying assembly held at the elementary school. Steckel third-grade students read the book "Our Friend Mikayla" about a third-grade girl with multiple disabilities and how her classmates befriended her and included her in all school activities. Steckel students had an opportunity to meet Mikayla, hear her story and ask questions when Mikayla, her mother and nurse visited the school for the Olweus antibullying kickoff assembly Nov. 9. Steckel's principal wanted the students to leave the assembly with the message: all students will be accepted and friendship should be shared with everyone regardless of physical diversity. Classroom meetings concerning antibullying are held biweekly.
