1939 World's Fair is theme for America on Wheels gala
The theme for America On Wheel's 5th annual "Moonlight Memories Gala" Nov. 30 is the 1939 New York World's Fair.
In 1935, in the depths of the Great Depression, a group of New York City retired policemen decided to create an international exposition to lift the city and the United States out of depression. Not long after, these men formed the New York World's Fair Corp. The committee declared the New York World's Fair as "everyman's fair." The official colors of the New York World's Fair were blue and orange.
Two New York World's Fair collectors, John Riccardelli and Dennis Bell, will bring items to display at the gala. Riccardelli has the original admissions book to the fair signed by the King and Queen of the United Kingdom, which is valued at more than $20,000.
Two 1930's cars from the Bulgari Collection will be on display on the patio in front of the museum, 5 N. Front St., Allentown. The museum's new exhibit is "American Classics of the 1930s."
The World's Fair had seven Zones, which will figure in the evening's gala. The entrance will be the "Government-Welcome Zone." The West Gallery "American Classics of the 1930s" exhibit will be the "Community Interest Zone," where Miller & Co. - Hits of the Golden Age of Radio, featuring Nancy Desiderio, will entertain.
The HubCap Cafe will be turned into the "Food Zone," with featured stations by caterer Maison Blanc. The Library will have the history of the fair in the "Communications & Business Zone."
The halls on the second floor will be lined with silent auction tables in the "Production & Distribution Zone." The Orientation Theatre (Lego Train Exhibit) and Long Haul Room (Local Train Exhibit) will be the "Transportation Zone 1 & 2." The Photo Booth, donated by Wesley Works, and the AOW Prize Wheel will represent the "Amusement Zone."
Attire is casual but attendees are encouraged wear 1930's attire.
There will be cocktails and hors d' oeuvres.
