Hornets drop regular season finale

When asked earlier in the week about how to stop Parkland, head coach Joe Bottiglieri didn't really have a definitive answer, but he stressed about slowing down their offensive threats. The only problem is, the Trojans have a plethora of talented athletes on the offensive side of the ball.

Maybe the most explosive player, Jarel Elder, did not play because of an ankle injury, but Tim Baranek and Eli Redmond made up for him, each rushing for more than 100 yards and at least one touchdown, in a 42-17 win at East Penn School District stadium in the regular season finale.

"They're good players," said Bottiglieri about Baranek and Redmond. "They have a lot of weapons. They did what they had to, they executed well. You can't make any mistakes or they'll get you. We called a blitz and our linebacker didn't blitz, so the quarterback ran right where the linebacker was supposed to blitz and it was a touchdown. They're a well-disciplined, well-coached team."

The first of Redmond's four touchdowns was the only score in the first quarter, a 73-yard punt return. But his next touchdown may have been the most bizarre.

Lined up at the eight yard line, Redmond took a handoff up the gut and was stuffed at the five. But in a flash, he was picked up into the air and carried into the end zone by his offensive lineman.

Redmond finished with over 200 all-purpose yards. The other guy, Baranek, also had more than 200 yards of total offense. His 75-yard touchdown run came off the missed blitz read from the Green Hornets. He also found Jarey Elder for a 20-yard fourth quarter score.

Dalton Landis, who hit the game-winning field goal in last year's game, got Emmaus (5-5) on the board in the third quarter with a 36 yarder that brought the Trojans lead to 14-3, and maybe some momentum.

But that quickly left after Baranek's run, and two more by Redmond. Parkland (8-2) tallied three touchdowns in a span of 51 seconds. A fumble on the kickoff, and a Redmond interception of Andrew Kerson gave the Trojans the ball back each time.

"That one really hurt after we had it to 11," said Bottiglieri of the Baranek run. "If you get them in a third and long, you have to make sure you execute on defense. We didn't do that, and it opened up the proverbial flood gates."

Emmaus found the end zone twice in the fourth quarter. A 10-yard run from Wyl Miller and a 36-yard pass from Kerson to Kyzir White.

Miller was named Emmaus' offensive MVP of the game, and Mike Weldon took home hardware as the defensive player of the game for the Green Hornets.

On senior day, Bottiglieri credited some of his senior defensive players for holding Parkland off as long as they did and never giving up. Those players included Jake Maehrer, Weldon, John Ruggerio, Travis Kulp, Micah Fick and Kevin Nguyen.

"The seniors did a nice job," said Bottiglieri. "They showed good leadership. We're going to miss them, but we have another game next week in the playoffs so we'll see how we do there."
