Football team ends year with big Trojan rivalry

The Emmaus football team had one of its more season-defining victories last Friday night, with a 35-14 statement win at Nazareth. The win may have vaulted the Green Hornets into a postseason tournament.

"They were feeling pretty good," head coach Joe Bottiglieri said about his team after the game. "We talked about it during the week, going on the road playing a good Nazareth team, we're going to need to step it up and play physical, and play smart. They did just that, and they felt pretty good about what they did."

Four different Green Hornets contributed to touchdowns, and Bottiglieri couldn't have been happier with the contributions of each player.

"Wyl [Miller] played well, and Kyzir White had a good game on offense and defense," said Bottiglieri. "Andrew Kerson, our quarterback, played really well, making good decisions and good throws. Overall the offensive line gave him good protection. Defensively, Andy Davidson, Micah Fick, Jake Maehrer, Kyzir, we held Nazareth to the lowest total they've had all year. There were a lot of pluses for us to move on with."

Emmaus (5-4 overall, 4-4 LVC) will have to play another sound game on both sides of the ball when they welcome Cedar Crest Boulevard rival Parkland (7-2, 7-1) for the seniors' last home game this Friday night at EPSD Stadium.

The Trojans have won seven straight games and are scoring on their opponents at a frantic pace. Their first team defense has also been solid, pitching three shutouts over that seven-game span.

"We better be ready to play this week," said Bottiglieri. "They have a lot of weapons. They're good on both sides of the ball, but their offense is just so explosive because [Jarel] Elder, [Eli] Redmond and [Tim] Baranek can go coast-to-coast on any given play. Very sound and well coached offensive scheme. They're really in a pretty good groove right now."

Bottiglieri's plan is to try and keep that prolific attack on the sidelines as much as he can by running the football and moving the chains. Miller, Kerson, and Daniel Velasco will be relied on heavily to pound through the Trojans stout front seven. Along with Maehrer, Tom Bisko and Kevin Nguyen, these backs have done a good job in putting up points. The Green Hornets will need to do a lot of that in this weekends contest.
