Volleyball downed in three games

The Emmaus volleyball team has been resilient for much of the season. After a September 25 loss to Parkland, the Green Hornets rattled off three straight wins. Then a loss to Becahi on October 4 was followed by two straight wins.

Emmaus (11-3) will be looking to bounce back once again after a three-game loss to Southern Lehigh last Monday night at Emmaus High School.

The Green Hornets, which held a lead in each of the three games, were downed 25-17, 25-20, 25-18.

"We talked about bouncing back," said head coach Gwen Millets. "They looked like two different teams. We are looking at how we can get back on track. We wanted to beat Southern Lehigh, we just made too many errors."

The Spartans rallied at different points in the games when they needed it most. Emmaus held a 15-13 lead in game one, but couldn't match points with Southern Lehigh. The Spartans' kills seemed to be put in the right spots, and the Green Hornets couldn't get theirs over the net and into play.

With the score tied at two in the second game, Emmaus tallied the next four points, but once again Southern Lehigh (12-1) rallied and took the lead for good at 14-13.

"We couldn't stop that rally right at the first point," said Millets. "If we're losing those points because of errors, we just have to get the next one. Unfortunately it just kept going. We couldn't bounce back from those mistakes we were making. I think that's the tough thing. Once that shadow of a doubt creeps into your head, it's hard to get it out. I knew they could do it, but it's tough to get the doubt out of their heads."

Both teams came in ranked in the top 10 in the state. It had the feeling of a playoff game, and both teams may see each other down the line again in districts.

"Coming in we had a good warm-up and were feeling good," said Millets. "Southern Lehigh is a very well-coached team and we knew they were going to be tough. We know we're going to see them again. One-and-out, one-and-out, that's what we want. Unfortunately it builds up to a four [or] five point rally."

Emmaus already clinched a berth in the Lehigh Valley Conference tournament which begins next week. The Green Hornets still have two conference games remaining with a home game against Dieruff (10/16) and an away contest at Central Catholic (10/18) to focus on their winning ways.
