LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Once again, the circus comes to town

No one is ever too old for the circus, and now is the time to relive those memories. Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus returns to Stabler Arena, Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Oct. 25 - 28, complete with elephants, camels, horses, dogs, acrobats and three dancing Ringlettes in "The Greatest Show on Earth."

There is one act that cannot be missed: The Urias Family motorcycle stunt act, which revs customized 125cc motorcycles at speeds up to 60 mph in a 16-foot diameter steel globe.

The act has been around for more than 100 years and the fourth generation of this family is ready to amaze, performing stunts in the steel globe. The high-speed act led by Erwin and Melvin Urias was created by their great-grandfather, Joaquin, who invented the globe in 1912.

Hailed as the First Family of the Motorcycle Globe, the steel orb has been in their family for more than 80 years and has been a fan favorite for years.

Victor, Erwin and Melvin's father brought the daring act to Ringling Bros. in 1978. They were the first to put three motorcycles and a woman inside the globe.

With more than 30 years of experience, three gold statues at the International Circus Festival in Lima, Peru, some two million miles in the globe, and a record for the most overhead loops, Victor and his wife, Kathia, handed over the family business to their sons.

Continuing the family tradition is very important to Melvin and Irwin Urias, who grew up with the circus, practicing their entire lives for a performance like this. Even Irwin's children, ages 12 and 8, are preparing to follow in their tracks with exhilarating tricks.

One important tradition the Urias Brothers always follow is to feature a woman in their show. This year, a woman will be suspended in the middle of the Split Globe of Death by her neck while others ride around her. Olga is "one of the few riders in the world to do this," says Melvin about his wife.

Melvin is amazed by the reactions: "It's so simple. The people love it." His brother, Irwin, who can't get enough of the crowd, is "most grateful for their reactions."

It's not easy living the life of a circus performer. Says Melvin, "It's not the life for everyone."

So, don't go hopping on a train anytime soon. The family travels and performs 10 months out of the year, spending the two months off living in Florida practicing new stunts. The Urias Brothers are always trying to do something new and different, and a lot of practice goes into making a stunt successful.

This motorcycle stunt family expects to be with the circus for a long time. The passion the family has is astounding, despite risking their lives every performance.

It's what Irwin has always wanted, saying, "I love it. I have no regrets. It's like an adventure."

Ringling Brothers has three tours: Blue ("Dragons") Gold ("Barnum Bash") and Red Tour ("Fully-Charged").

Coming to Stabler is "Barnum Bash," featuring, in addition to The Urias Family and the Ringlettes: Brett and Cathy Carden, exotic animal trainers and presenters; Dean Kelley, clown-preshow host; Duo Fusion, hand-balancing; Francleib Rodrigues, aerial foot loop; Anton and Victor Franke, comedy duo; Dmytrio Khaladzhy, strongman; Havana Troupe, horizontal casting bar; and The Flying Cruzados, double wheel of steel.

Get to the show an hour before it starts and meet the Urias Brothers and other acts.

Ringling Bros. Stabler shows are: 7 p.m. Oct. 25, 26; 11 a.m., 3 p.m., 7 p.m. Oct. 27; and 1 p.m. Oct. 28.
