Boys surge into LVCs, eye Parkland rematch
The Emmaus boys soccer team finished its season with a 10-game unbeaten streak, going 9-0-1 to finish out the year 13-3-1, putting the Hornets in a tie with Parkland for the top spot in the Lehigh Valley Conference point standings.
The Trojans claimed the number one seed for the playoffs based on their 4-0 win over Emmaus earlier in the season.
The season didn't end on an easy note for the Hornets. Emmaus had to go into overtime against Central Catholic, but came away with a 1-0 win and then wrapped up the regular season with a 1-0 win over Council Rock North in a nonconference game on Saturday.
In both wins, Charlie Jerry scored Emmaus' only goal of the game, giving him five goals on the season. The winning goal against Central Catholic came on a penalty kick from Jerry, while Kevin Waterman assisted on the winning goal against Council Rock North. Goalie Kevin Fine started all 17 games for Emmaus, producing 10 shutouts on the season, moving himself into second place for shutouts by an Emmaus goalie.
The win over Council Rock North was especially satisfying, given that it was the Indians that knocked Emmaus out of the PIAA tournament last season.
Much of the Hornets lineup had some time off in recent games against Allen and Dieruff, with second-team players seeing added playing time. The opportunity gave seniors Finn Hobson and Gordon Daichendt and junior Justis Faulkner their first goals of the season for the Hornets.
Assuming it advancess past a tough Freedom team in the LVC semifinals Tuesday night, Emmaus might get an anticipated rematch against rival Parkland in the LVC finals, if all goes as planned. Parkland is matched up against the fourth-seeded Northampton Konkrete Kids, and was the last team to defeat Emmaus during the regular season.
"Although the score was very lopsided, I wasn't distraught with the result," said Emmaus coach John Cari of the earlier loss to the Trojans. "We played well in the first half and if we didn't miss a penalty kick, we would have taken a lead and it would have been a different game. We can play with them, we just need to be confident and patient."
It was the loss to Parkland that sparked the team on its run of 10 straight games without a loss, making up for losing three of their first seven games in what was a slow start to the season.
A.J. Bishop finished the regular season leading the team with 15 goals, while Jerry led the team with eight assists on the season and was second on the team in goals.
After the LVC playoffs, the Hornets will go right into district play next week to defend their District 11 championship from last season when they won four playoff games by a combined score of 5-0 after losing to Easton in the LVC semis. Emmaus then lost to Council Rock North 3-2 in double-overtime in the first round of the state tournament.
