Wallitsch sets new mark for Hornets
Two years ago when Lisa Wallitsch recorded her 1000th assist, she had high hopes for a bright future and knew 2000 was a definite possibility. But what she didn't think was possible, albeit a lot of hard work, was reaching the third plateau of her high school career.
During a September 27 game against Easton, Wallitsch surpassed the 3000 career assist mark. It is an unbelievable feat, and Wallitsch will go down as Emmaus' all-time assist leader, with more games to add to the total.
"It was really exciting," Wallitsch said about the mark. "None of the girls knew, I didn't even know, but it was very exciting to reach that milestone."
Wallitsch has been playing volleyball since fourth grade, and setter was her first and main position since. As a freshman at Emmaus, she started as a defensive specialist. An injury to then starting setter Carolyn Lukiewski, a 1000-career assist player, opened the door for Wallitsch. The transition was a smooth one.
She hit the 1000 and 2000 career assist marks her sophomore and junior seasons, respectively. Even with an influx of new players up front, the Green Hornets have been strong and can easily hammer home the pin point sets Wallitsch lays up. She credits her teammates that allow her to feel comfortable knowing they will finish at the net. Allie Traynor, Corinne Justus and Mackenzie O'Brien have been on the right side of some perfect sets this season.
Emmaus (9-2) has been on a roll this season. It battled defending state champion Parkland to a close four-set loss, and then rattled off three straight three-set wins. The Green Hornets fell in a hard fought match to Bethlehem Catholic last Thursday.
"Parkland is a great team, and so is Becahi," said Wallitsch. "We came out as strong as we could but we came up short. Hopefully our next few games we come out and win and finish out the season strong."
Wallitsch is strongly considering DeSales University for her collegiate choice, and head coach Michele Zabinski was at the Becahi game watching closely.
With five games remaining in the regular season, the Emmaus volleyball team looks to finish strong. Wallitsch added that her goal is for her team to reach the Lehigh Valley Conference championship, and qualify for districts. With her as the catalyst of this offense, and the way the Green Hornets have been playing, those goals may well be accomplished before season's end.
