Patterson makes regionals

Last year Kelsey Patterson competed in the District 11 Golf Tournament against a strong field of upperclassmen and talented young players.

With many new faces in this year's tournament, the Emmaus junior played as well as almost all of them. She shot 135 over 27 holes Monday at Shawnee Golf Course to earn this year's District 11 Class AAA silver medal, finishing nine shots behind this year's champ, Helen Hsu of Freedom.

Patterson, who missed part of the season with an ankle injury, didn't have her best round of the season Monday, but played well enough to make it through to next week's regional tournament at Golden Oaks Golf Course in Fleetwood.

"I didn't play as well as I thought I was going to but it was decent," she said. "My putting was really good today, but my chipping was off."

Patterson shot 47 on her first 18 holes then posted 44s on the next two nines to come in four shots ahead of Whitehall's Loran Pritchard.

"The beginning was a little shaky," she said. "The second and third nine is where I finally got my grip on everything."

Four Emmaus boys competed in Monday's tournament. Sophomore Grant Schumaker finished one stroke out of a regional qualifying spot, which go to the top six players.

Schumaker shot 116, finishing one shot behind Nazareth's Bret Howey.

"I three-putted number 17," Schumaker said. "I thought I was in after I played, but people played really well today. There's a lot of competition now."

Emmaus senior Kyle Wambold finished just one shot behind Schumaker at 117 (36-40-41). Wambold ends a four-year career as an integral component of the Hornet's lineup.

Mike Lessel and Carlos Fullerton also competed at districts. Fullerton carded a 121 (40-37-44) while Lessel shot 122 (43-42-37).

Ashley Ressler competed in the girls tournament, finishing sixth at 147 (50-51-46).

Bethlehem Catholic freshman Nick Maff won this year's Class AAA boys title with a district record score of four-under par. Wilson's Collin Hagenbuch won the boys AA crown.

Hsu and Central Catholic's Franca Hurtado won the girls titles.
