The Northampton football team possesses one of the most prolific passing attacks in the Lehigh Valley this season.

But it was another quarterback who shined the brightest during last Friday's matchup between Emmaus and Northampton.

Hornet senior quarterback Andrew Kerson threw for 185 yards and three touchdowns to lead Emmaus. And combined with the big playmaking ability of sophomore running back Wyl Miller (134 rushing yards and two touchdowns), the Hornets defeated the Konkrete Kids at East Penn School District Stadium, 35-14.

"It's huge to bounce back to come back out here tonight and play really strong," said Kerson. "The offense had momentum. We only punted one time tonight and had one turnover. We had some consistent drives and some long sustaining drives down the field."

Trailing 21-7 heading into halftime, the Konkrete Kids (2-4, 1-4) sought to build on the success they experienced late in the second quarter. Nick Cook's touchdown strike to running back Brandon Heimbach brought the Konkrete Kids to within two scores with Northampton set to receive the second half kickoff.

But the Hornet defense rose to the challenge in halting the Konkrete Kids' opening drive of the second half. On a third-and-three from their own 36-yard line, senior Micah Fick tracked down Cook for the sack and an eight-yard loss, forcing the Konkrete Kids into a punt.

And just three plays later, Kerson took advantage of a prime opportunity. His 30-yard touchdown pass to junior wideout Kyzir White put the Hornets (4-2, 3-2) up 27-7 with 6:22 to play in the third quarter.

"My line blocked great for me," said Kerson. "My receivers got open and I just had to put the ball on them."

The Konkrete Kids did respond two possessions later on a four-yard touchdown run by running back Blake Boehm that capped off an 11-play drive that included two fourth down conversions.

But the Hornet offense, in particular Miller, showed their dynamic big play ability one last time. On the Hornets' next play from scrimmage, Miller took a handoff in which he cut outside and went for 63 yards for a touchdown. The score came just 17 seconds after the Konkrete Kids got to within 13 points with more than a half of the fourth quarter still remaining.

"Our defense has been playing well the whole year," said Kerson. "They did a great job tonight shutting down the top-ranked passer in the league. They did a great job tonight."

The Hornets wasted no time in setting the tone offensively. Miller took the Hornets' third offensive play of the game 67 yards up the right sideline for a touchdown that put Emmaus up 7-0 with 9:57 to play in the first quarter.

Kerson then connected with senior wideout Jacob Maehrer on the team's next two possessions to build a 21-0 lead at the second quarter's 7:50 mark. The first came on a third-and-10 at the end of the first quarter when Kerson found a crossing Maehrer across the field for a 25-yard score. The two found pay dirt once again on a third down conversion that went for 34 yards just minutes later.

"That definitely got us some momentum," said Kerson. "Scoring on the first drive is always huge. We always shoot out to do that. When it carried over to the second and third drives it was huge."

Sophomore running back Dan Velasco rushed for 49 yards on 11 carries. Maehrer had 67 yards receiving and two scores, while White recorded 66 yards receiving and his touchdown.

"We're definitely progressing," said Kerson. "Each week we try to get better. And tonight was a good night."

The Hornets will next travel to face winless Liberty (0-6) on Friday night. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Bethlehem Area School District Stadium.
