Boys soccer clinches West

After beating Freedom 1-0 last week, Emmaus boys soccer coach John Cari mentioned his team's upcoming game with Allen as somewhat of a yardstick to tell how much better his team had become. Early in the season, Allen downed Emmaus 2-1 in a game where many of Cari's seniors sat for much of the game as a disciplinary action for violating team rules.

This time around, Emmaus downed Allen 3-0 in a game that saw four Emmaus players draw yellow cards and one senior A.J. Bishop get ejected when he picked up his second yellow card of the game. The result was that Bishop was not only ejected, but could face a suspension.

In the win over Allen, Charlie Jerry contributed two assists, giving him a team-leading seven assists on the season. Jerry assisted on goals by seniors Finn Hobson and Adam Kita, while sophomore Parker Landis scored Emmaus' third goal on a penalty kick.

Beating the Carnaries extended Emmaus' record to 10-3-1 overall and 10-2 in the Lehigh Valley Conference, good enough to clinch the West Division. The Hornets have gone 6-0-1 since losing to Parkland 4-0 earlier in the season, the only blemish being a tie against Wilson West Lawn, third in the state at the time.

In their seven-game unbeaten streak, the Hornets have shutouts in four of their six wins and have allowed one goal each in their other two wins. The only time, they have allowed more than one goal in a game was in their 2-2 tie with Wilson West Lawn. The shutout against Allen moved goalkeeper Kevin Fine into third place for career shutouts by an Emmaus goalkeeper.

As for Bishop, he will be ineligible for at least one game, which will be against Dieruff, and he could potentially be out longer because of the two yellow cards that he received against Allen. Bishop's absence against Dieruff may not be too devastating for Emmaus, considering that the Huskies are 0-16-0 on the season.

Emmaus closes out its regular season this week with games against Dieruff and Central Catholic and a non-conference game Saturday at Council Rock North. Thursday night's game against the Vikings is Senior Night and will be played at Memorial Field.

The LVC semifinals will be next Tuesday. Emmaus will likely have a match with Freedom in the semis. The two teams last met on October 1 at Freedom and the Hornets got the winning goal from Bishop 34 seconds into the first overtime. Should Emmaus advance to the finals, they would most likely have a rematch with Parkland.

The LVC Finals are set to be played on October 18, with districts opening on October 23.
