Swingle again for Bach Choir

The Bach Choir of Bethlehem will present "Let's Swingle" as its fifth gala concert and fundraiser featuring The Swingle Singers, 8 p.m. Oct. 6, Baker Hall, Zoellner Arts Center, Lehigh University, Bethlehem.

Runners-up in the "Bach-appella Competition" for high school and college a cappella ensembles give a pre-concert performance at 7:40 p.m. The winning ensemble performs as part of the Swingle Singers' concert.

The Swingle Singers concert, "Classic Reinventions," is a program of classical music from Baroque (J.S. Bach) to Romantic (Debussy) to contemporary (Zavarro). The show includes classic English and American pop songs (artists include the Beatles and Mumford & Sons) and world music.

For more than four decades, "Swingle singing" has defined the modern a cappella art form: virtuosic vocal agility, blend and close-microphone technique.

The group, directed originally by Ward Swingle, began as backup singers on Paris recording sessions for Charles Aznavour, Edith Piaf and Michel Legrand. With Christiane Legrand as lead soprano, they sang the J.S. Bach's "Well-Tempered Klavier" as a sight-reading exercise.

The Swingles' first album, "Jazz Sebastien Bach," reached No. 1 on the charts and received five Grammy awards. The group's music has appeared on the soundtracks of movies and television shows.

The latest lineup of seven young and talented voices represents the group's transformation from pioneering classical-jazz crossover artists to contemporary vocal supergroup. The Swingle Singers, which has performed in the United Kingdom, United States, Europe and Asia, has released more than 50 recordings.

Bach Choir Executive Director Bridget George is very enthusiastic about the choice of The Swingle Singers for the 2012 Gala. She says, "The Swingle Singers are famous for their signature arrangements of music by Bach and were recently featured alongside other famous Bach interpreters in Michael Lawrence's film 'Bach and Friends.'

"They have played a vibrant and vital role in the recent upsurge of interest in a cappella singing and are a perfect fit. We are delighted to bring them to the Lehigh Valley for the first time."

Of The Swingle Singers, The Washington Post has raved: 'Nothing less than dazzling," and The Los Angeles Times has stated: "Everything about the Swingles is flawless."

With its fifth annual gala concert, The Bach Choir continues presenting world-class guest artists in different musical genres, all of whom have connections with the music of Bach. Past gala presentations have included Yo-Yo Ma, Dave Brubeck, Emma Kirkby, Tiempo Libre and Hilary Hahn.

There are general admission tickets, patron tickets (reserved seating and "meet and greet" with the artists at a post-concert pub-style party) and benefactor tickets (reserved seating, pre-concert cocktails, dinner and auction, "meet and greet" with the artists at a post-concert pub-style party.
