Schumaker wins LVC golf crown

The old golf adage rings true. Drive for show. Putt for dough.

Grant Schumaker might not win many long drive contests. And he certainly won't receive any dough for Monday's win. But it was solid putting that led the Emmaus junior to this year's Lehigh Valley Conference golf title.

Shumaker shot an even par 72 at Allentown Municipal to win the tournament by four strokes over a quartet of players that tied for second place.

"There are so many good players in this tournament," Schumaker said. "It feels really good to be on top.

"I putted really good today. I only had 30 putts. That's a lot better than I usually do."

Schumaker, who won this year's Lehigh Valley Junior Player of the Year title, got to 12 greens in regulation Monday and hit all but two fairways.

A district and regional qualifier last year, Schumaker's LVC title earns him and exemption into this year's District 11 Class AAA Championship. The experience he gained in last year's postseason helped him manage the course at this year's league tournament.

"I knew that from this yardage I just have to fight for pars and not try to go for pins," he said. "If you can you make a birdie, make a birdie, but I was just trying for as many pars as I could."

Shumaker, who drives the ball around 250 yards, plays Allentown Municipal often and has shot as low as 68 from the same tees he played Monday, which measure 6,546 yards. But with a steady wind through most of the round, he knew it wasn't a day to take unnecessary risks.

"It was really tough," he said. "Most holes felt like they were into the wind. It played a lot longer than it usually does. I play here a lot. The greens were pretty fast so it was tough to keep it below the hole and keep it the right speed."

Part of that second place tie included Emmaus teammate Kyle Wambold. The senior had a bad hole early, but managed to keep his round from getting out of hand.

He took a triple bogey 7 on the par-4 second hole.

"I handled it as well as I could," he said. "I parred the next three holes and birdied six."

He was playing himself back into contention before making a double bogey on the 12th hole. After that he knew it would be tough to win the tournament, but he was happy to have kept his cool and finished the round with birdies on 17 and 18.

"The main thing was trying to play well and win, but I was happy about how I handled it," Wambold said. "I went out today to try and keep my composure as much as I could and I did that. I was happy about that. Unfortunately it was just two holes. I kept my head in it. I was happy how I approached each shot. It just wasn't my day."

Wambold and Schumaker led Emmaus to the team tournament title. The Hornets went 11-0 this season to earn the LVC's regular season title. They have a chance to validate it Wednesday when they take on Blue Mountain, Northampton and Stroudsburg for the District 11 team title.

Other Emmaus players that competed at leagues included junior Carlos Fulerton, who shot 82 to finish two strokes out of the top 10. Junior Mike Lessel shot 84, while senior Chris Erb carded an 85 and sophomore pat Bryan shot 96.

Senior Ashley Ressler placed fourth in the girls tournament. She shot an 89, tying for third place but taking fourth by a match of cards.

Kelsey Patterson shot 94.
