Hannis injured in loss to Trojans

It was bad enough that the Emmaus girls soccer team was losing to rival Parkland 2-0, but what happened in the final 30 seconds made the loss much worse.

In her first game back from a separated shoulder, Devyn Hannis went down hard, landing on the same shoulder. The junior midfielder had been cleared to play just about 90 minutes prior to the game against Parkland. As trainers rushed to Hannis' side, coach Rob Rooney agonized over what he had just seen happen.

"We weren't even sure she was going to play tonight," said Rooney after the incident. "She was great for 79:30 and then that happened. I'm just gutted for her."

The loss continued the scoring drought for the Lady Hornets, who have scored just six goals in their last eight games now, after outscoring Allen and Dieruff 15-0 in the first two games of the season. As it turns out, that scoring spree was a mirage against two teams that have combined to go just 1-17 on the season so far.

"We're struggling in the final third [of the field], that's for sure. It needs to get better," lamented Rooney, whose team now stands at 2-5-1 on the season.

Emmaus gave up a tough goal with just eight seconds left in the first half, when Hannah Gombos took a pass from Jess Wetherhold and was able to get the ball into the net past goalie Katie Thomas. While Rooney was disappointed to give up the late goal, he was more disappointed that his team had missed an opportunity at the other end less than a minute and a half earlier.

"You never want to give up a goal late in the final seconds, but I think the bigger thing is that we missed a chance with 1:30 left and then we give up that goal and that ends up being a two-goal swing," said Rooney.

While the loss to Parkland was followed up with another tough loss to LVC foe Easton on Friday, the girls played a great game against a very tough Wilson West Lawn team on Saturday. The Lady Bulldogs are ranked ninth in Pennsylvania in girls soccer and the Hornets tied them 1-1 in Wilson.

Karis Poore had given the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead in the first half, but Mandy McCarthy tied the game in the second off an assist from Shannon McGinnis. Thomas notched nine saves in the game for an impressive 1-1 tie. Perhaps Emmaus can build off their strong showing against the Berks County powerhouse, but the fact remains that they are still winless in their last seven games.

Emmaus travels to Bethlehem Catholic on Thursday prior to hosting Penn Manor on Saturday and Freedom next Monday.
