Field hockey has 139-game win streak snapped
Nine years without a loss to a Lehigh Valley Conference field hockey team is a long time and finally, it happened.
After 139 straight LVC wins, Liberty downed the Emmaus Lady Hornets 1-0 in overtime on Monday night.
The numbers of the streak are staggering. If 139 games, covering nine years isn't impressive enough, how about the fact that the loss is the first to Liberty by a team coached by Sue Butz-Stavin, who is in her 37th season. The goal was the first scored by Liberty against Emmaus in 14 games.
While Emmaus losing to any local team is an upset, the fact that an 8-2 Liberty team was the one to do it, isn't all that surprising. The Hurricanes are 7-0 in the LVC this season and coach Mary Kathryn Omdahl believes her team is worth watching.
"I've got a great group of girls who work very hard," said Omdahl. "We've been preparing for this game mentally since Friday. Our seniors had this on their bucket list."
Ironically, it was a sophomore, Chelsea DeFrancisco, who scored the winning goal on an assist from senior Asia Wright.
The loss leaves Liberty and Northampton as the only undefeated teams in the LVC this season. Emmaus faces the Konkrete Kids on Tuesday.
There wasn't really any sign that Emmaus' streak was about to come to an end. The Hornets had outscored their opponents 48-0 coming into the game. Parkland had held the Hornets to just two goals in a 2-0 loss, but the Hornets bounced right back with a 7-0 win over Easton. Multi-goal games and wins by large deficits have been the norm for Emmaus this season.
Before their loss to Liberty, Emmaus sophomore Teresa Carotento put together her third four-goal game of the season against Easton in a 7-0 win. Senior Ashley Focht and junior Krissy Mikelson have been leading much of the offensive attack for Emmaus this season, and the two combined for the two goals that beat Parkland in a 2-0 win.
"We knew those two girls [Mikelson and Focht] were going to be able to help us a lot offensively. They've both played well this season and are really leaders on the field for us," said Butz-Stavin after the win over Parkland.
Focht and Mikelson were counted on to provide much of the offensive punch and they have done just that this season. Mikelson has scored 14 goals this season, while Focht has found the net six times. The win over Easton saw Focht go down with a knee injury late in the game and there is no immediate timetable for her return.
The Lady Hornets host Bethlehem Catholic Wednesday night at Memorial Field before three straight road games against Freedom, Penn Manor and the showdown with the K-Kids.
