Youth driving field hockey

You don't have to know much about field hockey to know that if you outscore your first four opponents by a combined score of 35-0, you're going to win a lot of games. Of course, if you're following the Emmaus field hockey team, you know that they're used to winning a lot of games.

Offensively, Emmaus had an amazing week, outscoring Central Catholic and Nazareth two teams in the middle of the pack in LVC field hockey by combined scores of 18-0.

Against Central Catholic, it was Ashley Focht, who led the way in a 12-0 win. All Focht did was score four goals and assist on three others. The performance was helped along by other players who had big days, including Krissy Mikelson, who had three goals, and Ashley Moxey, who contributed a goal and three assists on the day.

The Emmaus defenders played so well that the Vikings didn't even get a shot on goal throughout the game as the Hornets outshot Central Catholic 49-0.

"We're playing very well right now," head coach Sue Butz-Stavin said. "We have so many girls who are working hard and we're fixing some of the things that we identified early on as potential problems."

The 12-0 win was a repeat score of Emmaus' win over Dieruff earlier in the week.

When Nazareth came to Memorial Field for an LVC match, they were at least able to keep Emmaus in the single digits on the scoreboard, but still fell in a 6-0 shutout. Makheila MacDonald recorded nine saves in goal, while Tori Laczo notched one save for Emmaus.

Mikelson, a junior, was again in the middle of the action, picking up three goals for her third straight hat trick. After playing a big role for the team last season as a sophomore, Mikelson has stepped into even more of a leadership role with the team and now has 10 goals on the season. The fact that Mikelson and Moxey (four goals) are chipping in with big contributions as juniors and sophomore Teresa Carotenuto (nine goals) are teaming with senior Focht, gives a lot of promise not just for this season, but beyond.

"We always try to get younger players involved," said Butz-Stavin. "That way, they've gained some experience when they're needed to step in. We're very fortunate to have so many good, young players who are stepping up."

The field hockey team travels to Parkland (1-3) this week before home games against Easton (2-1) and Liberty (4-2). Right now, Emmaus and Northampton (5-0) look to be the teams to beat in the LVC. They don't square off against each other until October 2nd in Northampton, so a lot can change between now and then.
