Six bands in We Rock benefit

Rock music for a cause is the theme of We Rock's concert, 1 - 9 p.m. Sept. 8, MainGate nightclub, 17th and Liberty streets, Allentown.

The concert benefits Lehigh Valley Health Network's Breast Health Services. We Rock has held biannual charity concerts for the past six years.

We Rock was organized by Matt Wolf, better known in the Lehigh Valley music scene as Matt Metal, host of a long-running radio show on Lehigh County Community College radio station WXLV.

"I don't do this on my own," he said of We Rock. "It's a bunch of people from the Valley pitching in for the cause."

We Rock was born six years ago when Wolf and a group of friends got together to discuss what they could do to help worthwhile causes in the area.

"I used to run a golf tournament for pediatric cancer," said Wolf "One day I was sitting around with a bunch of friends discussing what else we could do and we came up with the idea for We Rock."

We Rock also holds an event in April on behalf of the Lehigh Valley Chapter of Autism Speaks. The beneficiaries have remained consistent throughout the years.

"It was a mutual decision to support Breast Health Services for the September concert," said Wolf. "All of us in the group had lost someone to breast cancer."

We Rock features a lineup of six local bands, including Psych, Nuff Sedd, Endzone, Cherry Bombs, Social Call and the Dave Goddess Group.

"We hope to see everyone come out for this," said Wolf. "All the bands have donated their time and Dominic [Germano, MainGate owner] has allowed us to use his club free of charge."

The Dave Goddess Group is fresh off its recent CD release, "Something New."

Goddess is well-known in the region from his former role as front man in the 1980's rock band, the Daddy Licks Band.

The new CD features classic rock devoid of pretension or posturing. The Dave Goddess Group has been performing since April 2011 and has opened for the likes of Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, Foghat and Blue Oyster Cult.

"Our [current] lineup is my favorite ever," said Goddess.

"I've been working with Tom Brobst, our sax and keyboard player, since before the Daddy Licks' days. He's the soul of the band. Everything he plays comes from somewhere down deep. People connect with the raw emotion he puts into everything he does."

Goddess feels it is important to give back to the local community, hence his involvement with We Rock. "As musicians, we feel we have a larger responsibility. Any time we have the opportunity to help others, we try to do our part," he said.

Goddess is familiar with playing for large crowds. "We [Daddy Licks] played many concerts, and opened for many national acts," he said. "Some of those crowds were in the 5,000-plus range. I think the biggest crowd we played for was a WZZO event at a lake somewhere in the Lehigh Valley. There were maybe 12,000 people there."

Goddess is never one to rest on his laurels. He is already planning the follow-up to "Something New."

"I have been writing and working with the band on new material. I feel really good about our new songs. I hope to get into the studio in the fall to record a few tracks. We'll see what happens after that," he said.
