It took all of 1:11 for Emmaus to score its first points of the 2012 season. A three-yard touchdown run from sophomore running back Dan Velasco proved to be the first of many scores for the Hornets, as they rolled through Germantown 40-0 at East Penn School District Stadium last Friday night.

After a quick three-and-out to open the game, the Bears punt attempt was fumbled and picked up before the Green Hornets took their first offensive possession of the game at the eight yard line. Velasco followed an offsides penalty against the Bears, with his three-yard score.

"I was really nervous coming into the game," Velasco said of his first full year of varsity. "First play I just said I have to get rid of this nervousness and need to get some confidence going."

A touchdown on his first touch of the ball was a good remedy to break the nerves.

Emmaus played sound defense all game, putting pressure on the quarterback in the back field and not giving the running backs anywhere to move. But with Germantown putting together a drive midway through the first quarter, that defense held arguably the biggest stop of the game.

A first down run from the 20 was fumbled by the Bears quarterback after being hit in the backfield and returned 80 yards by Tom Bisko.

The Emmaus defense had their hands in another big defensive score. With 1:47 remaining in the first half, senior Travis Kulp intercepted a pass and returned it 19 yards.

A forced fumble on Germantown's next possession led to a Dalton Landis 25-yard field goal, one of two on the night, to give the Green Hornets a commanding 27-0 lead going into halftime.

In the second half, Emmaus just needed to work the clock, and work some plays to gain experience moving into the conference part of their schedule ahead.

Velasco, Kevin Nguyen, Bisko and Emmanuel Doelue split the carries, and pounded their way to 130 total rushing yards for the game.

"They're phenomenal," said Velasco of his offensive line and fullbacks. "They're very disciplined and strike hard. They give us some open holes to run through."

Bisko and Doelue added rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

"I think we're a pretty tough team, just like the other teams in our conference," added Velasco. "We'll be pretty good moving forward."

One spot that head coach Joe Bottiglieri wants to focus on improving is the passing game. Emmaus threw for only 11 yards.

"We need to be more consistent," said Bottiglieri. "We were missing blocks on the back side, we just need to sustain. We're not going to say we're inexperienced because that is not an excuse. We practice hard, and we do it in practice so we have to do it in the games.

"Our passing game needs to be more consistent. We need to be able to take the ball down the field and put it in the endzone. We'll be alright once we iron out some of those things."
